The NCAA News

Just one week after the Arizona women’s swimming and diving program claimed its first-ever national championship, the men’s program followed suit, winning its first national championship this past weekend in Federal Way, Washington.

The Wildcats finished with 500.5 total points, well ahead of second-place Texas, which finished with 406. Stanford, California and Auburn rounded out the top-five team finishers, as Auburn’s five-year win streak came to a close.

Arizona head coach Frank Busch was named NCAA Coach of the Year, the same honor he claimed last week after his women’s team won the national title.

"I cannot begin to fathom how amazing tonight was," Busch said. "I am so proud of these men and their determination to make this an outstanding week for Wildcat Swimming and Diving.”

Arizona’s depth played a major role in the team’s success this weekend, as the Wildcats won three of the event’s five relays. The Wildcats set a meet record in the 800-yard freestyle relay, winning with a time of 6 minutes, 12.85 seconds, more than one second better than the time it set last year. Jean Basson, Darian Townsend, Joel Greenshields and Nicolas Nilo teamed up to win the event.

Townsend and Greenshields also swam on Arizona’s victorious 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams.

A pair of individual champions also helped propel the Wildcats to their first national title, as Albert Subirats won the 100-yard butterfly in 45.07 seconds and Townsend won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:42.72. Subirats also won national titles with the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams.

Auburn standout Cesar Cielo stole the show in the sprints, breaking his own meet records en route to the national titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events. Cielo’s 50-yard freestyle time of 18.52 seconds is the fastest ever in the event, but isn’t considered a world record because it wasn’t in the metric length used in international competitions.

Cielo, who also won national titles with Auburn’s 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays, became the school-record holder with 10 NCAA titles. Cielo was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year for a second consecutive year.

"I am really happy with what I have achieved this weekend, to swim 13 times, that is very hard," Cielo said. "It feels like all the work we have put into it paid off and I am just thankful for my coaches and my teammates to push me. It is great, this is definitely the happiest moment of my career."

While Cielo was winning the sprints, Georgia’s Sebastien Rouault was dominating the longest races of the championship. Rouault won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:09.48 and also claimed the 1,650-yard freestyle title in 14:26.86. Stanford’s Paul Kornfield also won two titles, finishing first in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke.

Dave Walters earned Texas’ only title, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:32.56. Indiana’s Ben Hesen won the 100-yard backstroke in 44.72 seconds while Penn State’s Patrick Schirk won the 200-yard event in 1:40.22.

Georgia’s Gil Stovall set a meet record with his time of 1:41.33 in the 200-yard butterfly, breaking a mark that had stood since 1991. Alex Vanderkaay won the 400-yard individual medley for Michigan in 3:41.58.

The diving portion of the competition turned out to be just as exciting as the swimming, as two meet records were broken in the three events. Miami (Florida) diver Reuben Ross set a new points record on the three-meter board while Ohio State’s Sean Moore accomplished the same feat on the platform. Georgia’s Chris Colwill won the one-meter event and was named NCAA Diver of the Year after finishing second in the other two diving events. His coach, Dan Larak, was named coach of the year.
