The Academics, Eligibility and Compliance Cabinet will discuss a variety of topics, including nontraditional coursework and the academic success of transfer student-athletes at its final meeting in Dallas this week. The group, which deals with a wide range of subject matter, will be divided into several smaller cabinets when the reorganization of Division I occurs later this summer.
The Transfer Issues Ad Hoc Group is expected to recommend that the new Division I Academics Cabinet further examine the impact of transferring on a student-athlete’s academic success, both from a junior college to a four-year institution and between four-year institutions. Among the possible recommendations is a revision to current transfer requirements for student-athletes moving from a two-year to a four-year institution.
The Board of Directors recently adopted legislation, effective August 1, 2009, requiring specific academic credentials from two-year college transfers who do not meet minimum academic standards for financial aid, practice and competition.
Additionally, nontraditional coursework will continue to be a topic of discussion. The Cabinet is expected to propose legislation that will provide clarification and guidance regarding nontraditional coursework, including distance learning and correspondence courses.
Earlier this year, the Management Council defeated a proposal that would have required two-year college transfers to take any distance or correspondence courses from the two-year college they physically attend.
