Men’s soccer teams representing three United States service academies made history last weekend after appearing in a two-day tournament hosted by Birmingham-Southern.
Squads from Army, Navy and Air Force joined Birmingham-Southern in the BSC Armed Forces Soccer Classic September 19 and 21, marking the first time the three service academy soccer teams have competed in the same place at the same time.
Birmingham-Southern head coach Preston Goldfarb, a former Army armored intelligence officer, said the tournament had been in the works since 2001.
“It is important to always find ways to recognize the men and women who serve in our military, and we are excited to bring the Army, Air Force and Navy soccer teams to Birmingham so that our community can express our support for these future leaders,” Goldfarb said.
Air Force blanked Navy, 1-0, and Army defeated the host Panthers, 3-1, in the first day of action. Air Force collected its second win of the weekend after edging Army, 2-1, and Navy shut out Birmingham-Southern, 1-0, on the second day.
In addition to the games, the Army Golden Knight Elite Parachute Jump Team from Fort Knox, Kentucky, delivered the American flag and game ball to the center of the field at the Birmingham-Southern Soccer Park on opening day, and the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Elite Parachute Jump Team from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, did the same on the second day.
