Women’s soccer scholars named

The College Sports Information Directors of America announced the 2008 ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Team, led by Yael Averbuch of North Carolina and Katy Tafler of Grand Valley State.

Averbuch, who represents the university division, is a senior midfielder and two-time first team All-American. She has 31 goals and 28 assists in her career and has helped the Tar Heels to a record of 86-7-4 during her time at Chapel Hill, including a national championship in 2006. She was joined on the first team by teammate Kristi Eveland, a junior with the Tar Heels.

Tafler, a senior forward, represents the college division. A two-time Daktronics Division II Player of the Year, she is the top scorer for the undefeated Grand Valley State. Also a two-time first team All-American, she has 114 goals and 41 assists in her career. The only repeat selection on the Academic All-America College Division first team is senior Lisa Fahey of Washburn.
