The William and Mary men’s gymnastics team has captured an academic honor by a margin similar to those found in meets.
In the closest three-way finish since the inception of the College Gymnastics Association’s academic team award in 1991, William and Mary has been declared the national academic team champion with a combined team grade-point average of 3.421, edging defending champion Ohio State and MIT.
Stanford and Michigan placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Following are the top 10 teams:

4. Stanford | 3.280 |
5. Michigan | 3.253 |
6. Springfield | 3.176 |
7. Temple | 3.171 |
8. Illinois | 3.124 |

10. Nebraska | 3.021 |
The College Gymnastics Association also honored 73 individual gymnasts as 2008 first-team All-America Scholar-Athletes for attaining at least a 3.50 GPA and 54 second-team All-American Scholar-Athletes for attaining a GPA between 3.2 and 3.499. Aaron Ingram of William and Mary, Jon Drollinger of Illinois, Matthew Heine of MIT, Matthew Davis of Springfield and David Ferris of Navy earned first-team honors for four straight years.
