Institutions interested in hosting the 2010-11 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship will have a second opportunity to submit bids for the event this spring, the Men's Water Polo Committee decided. The committee met January 28-29 in Indianapolis.
A small number of bids were received in the first round, and the committee felt it could generate more interest in hosting the event by opening the bid process a second time. Information about hosting a championship is available online, including the championship bid packet, a proposed budget and facility evaluation form.
The committee also commended Stanford for its presentation of the 2007 championship. The school will host the 2008 event as well.
The committee also met with the sport's national coordinator of officials, Bob Corb, to discuss future programming, including the selection of officials, and training and development programs.
In championship-selection issues, the committee recommended three conferences to receive automatic qualification for the 2008 championship. An at-large berth completes the four-team bracket. The committee also recommended reorganizing the selection criteria for the championship. The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet will review the recommendations at that group's June meeting.
Finally, the committee recommended Mike Sutton, athletics director at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, be installed as permanent chair of the group. Sutton has served as interim chair since the resignation of John Ziegler, former Bucknell coach.
