One year after the Bluffton bus tragedy, parents of some of the players have turned tragedy into action, asking Congress to consider legislation for increasing the safety of commercial buses. "With grieving, people say, you can either get bitter or get better. If you get bitter, that leads nowhere. I don't think that honors the person who is gone," said John Betts the father of David Betts who was killed in last year’s Bluffton bus tragedy.

The parents have established Web site to gain support for the bill.

The crash prompted increased discussion about the safety of motor coaches — like Bluffton Bus — and school buses. Some states, like California, require that new school buses include safety belts.

Would safety belts have made a difference in the Bluffton crash?  Betts seems to think so. "You know, every seat in that bus was intact," he said. "If every seat is intact, and my son is in a seat, he's intact. So are the other boys on that bus. This is not rocket science. If they had been wearing seat belts, they might have had some cracked ribs or internal bruises, but they would have been alive. Sure, it would cost the bus companies more, but it would save lives in the future."
