The Texas women’s volleyball team had four teams play their way through four separate pools to claim the team title at the third annual Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in San Diego April 20.
Texas advanced all four tandems to the finals, with sophomore Ashley Engle and junior Kiley Hall claiming the Flight A championship.
Teams from Clemson, Nebraska, San Diego, Southern California and Wisconsin joined Texas to compete in the one-day event that will air on CBS College Sports on Sunday, May 25 (2 p.m. EDT).
Each school entered a pair in the A, B, C and D flights. Points were awarded within each flight for qualifying for the semifinals (two points in Flight A, and one point in B,C,D), making the finals (four points in Flight A, and two points in B,C,D) and winning the flight (eight points in Flight A, and four points in B,C,D).
Texas totaled 14 points to claim the championship, while San Diego tallied 11 points to finish second. Nebraska recorded eight points for third and Southern California registered four points for fourth.
In another event, Georgia won the inaugural Southeastern Conference Coaches Beach Volleyball Championship, which was held at Florida April 12.
The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics has discussed the sport in recent meetings in its exploration of finding additional athletics participation opportunities for female student-athletes.
