The National Consortium for Academics and Sports through its Scholar-Baller program has announced the 16 winners of the Academic Momentum Award. A male and female winner was chosen from each of eight regions.
Winners include Tadeu Terra of St. John's (New York), who as a Brazilian native struggled in his English-taught classes throughout his first semester. Hours of tutoring improved his grade-point average an entire point by the end of his third semester.
Other winners include a student-athlete "special admit" going on to earn dean's list honors and another student-athlete threatened with expulsion finding the motivation to achieve academically.
The awards will be presented January 28 at the NCAS conference in Orlando, Florida.
