Student-athlete academicians honored

The National Consortium for Academics and Sports through its Scholar-Baller program has announced the 16 winners of the Academic Momentum Award. A male and female winner was chosen from each of eight regions.

Winners include Tadeu Terra of St. John's (New York), who as a Brazilian native struggled in his English-taught classes throughout his first semester. Hours of tutoring improved his grade-point average an entire point by the end of his third semester.

Other winners include a student-athlete "special admit" going on to earn dean's list honors and another student-athlete threatened with expulsion finding the motivation to achieve academically.

The awards will be presented January 28 at the NCAS conference in Orlando, Florida.

Female Academic Momentum Award winners are:

  • Kristin Marie King, Rockhurst, golf
  • Anjelica Maria Selden, UCLA, softball
  • Domineque Scott, East Stroudsburg, field hockey
  • Lisa Geer, St. John’s (New York), softball
  • Lindsey Lee, Fairfield, volleyball
  • Kim Critton, Florida, basketball
  • Tara Langley, Mississippi, volleyball
  • Jena Lind, Southern Methodist University, soccer

Male Academic Momentum Award winners are:

  • Cesar Zambrano, Illinois-Chicago, soccer
  • Jon Toailoa, Northern Arizona, football
  • Jarryd Anderson, La Salle, football
  • Tadeu Terra, St. John’s (New York), soccer
  • Dan Boudreau, Fairfield, lacrosse
  • Jaager Good, UCF, baseball
  • DeAngelo Smith, Cincinnati, football
  • Demarcus Conner, Oklahoma State, football
