The Olympic swim trials have ignited a debate over the limits of technology in sport. At issue is Speedo’s LZR Racer suit, which many believe is responsible for a slew of new world records.

Some studies show the swimsuits, which have no seams and were tested by NASA, can lower times from 1.9 to 2.2 percent.  “There’s no question if you’re not wearing it, you’re at a disadvantage,” Skip Foster, chair of the swimming and diving committee said.

In a recent interview, Foster discusses the possible impact of the LZR and other suites like it on NCAA competition. Last year the suits were not allowed because they were still being tested and were not readily available.  As the rules stand currently, however, these suits could be allowed in the future.
