Scoring for the 2009 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships will look a little different under a new system recommended by the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Committee.

The new system the committee endorsed during its June 11-13 meeting in Indianapolis uses weighted results with a 50-point base. Currently, the point base equals the number of starters in a discipline. The new system gives the top nine finishers additional points in varying increments, beginning with 50 points for the top finisher. The 10th-place finisher will receive 30 points, and every finisher after that will be scored in a one-point-descending scale (29 for 11th place, 28 for 10th, etc.).

The committee also announced its championship allocations for 2009. In the men’s and women’s Alpine events, the East region has 17 slots for each gender and the West region has 18 for each gender. In men’s Nordic events, the Central region has 10 slots, the East region has nine and the West region has 20. In women’s Nordic events, the Central region will have 11 slots, the East 12 and the West 16.

The committee also determined the host sites for several regional competitions. Michigan Tech will host the 2009 Central regional and Nevada will host the 2009 West regional. Middlebury will host the 2010 East regional. The committee chose the 2009 East regional host, Colby College, last year.

The committee is re-soliciting interested institutions for bids for the 2010 championships.

In other action, the committee recommended that Drew Galbraith, associate director of athletics for compliance and administration at Dartmouth, continue as chair.
