Schools adjust as Hanna nears

Several schools are adjusting their athletics schedules in anticipation of Tropical Storm Hanna’s expected landfall somewhere in the Southeast.

Charleston Southern’s 1:30 p.m. Saturday football game versus Wofford has been moved to Spartanburg and will be played at Gibbs Stadium at 6 p.m. All tickets purchased Saturday will be general admission.

Coastal Carolina moved its 7 p.m. Saturday home game versus Colgate to 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will still be played at Brooks Stadium.

This weekend’s Stetson Invitational, a volleyball tournament in DeLand, Florida, also will have schedule changes. Nicholls State, impacted by Hurricane Gustav, dropped out of the tournament and game times were adjusted.

Christopher Newport postponed all on-campus athletic events for the weekend, including women's soccer and volleyball tournaments and the Captains' football game versus Wesley. The school will attempt to reschedule the contests. The university cancelled all classes and activities for Friday and Saturday and evacuated residence halls.

The Big South Conference announced several changes at its member schools as well - the Big South Challenge women's soccer tournament at Coastal Carolina was cancelled. Gardner-Webb and Florida Golf Coast's women's soccer game scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday was moved to 1 p.m. Wofford cancelled its trip men's cross country trip to Campbell Saturday.

The Rees Jones Invitational, a men's golf tournament hosted by Michigan State in Hilton Head, South Carolina, was cancelled. Officials will try to reschedule the event in November.

Richmond rearranged schedules for field hockey and men's soccer contests, but still planned to hold its football game versus Virginia Saturday afternoon.

Baruch postponed Saturday's men's soccer game against Manhattanville for a date in the "near future." As of Friday afternoon, the school was still planning to host the Baruch Cross Country Invitational on Sunday as planned.

Rutgers-Camden modified the schedule for its Cialella Soccer Classic, moving Saturday games to Sunday.

North Carolina-Pembroke rescheduled a men's soccer game against Pfeiffer and a men's and women's cross country invitational.

Wesley postponed a women's soccer match against Mary Washington and cancelled a trip to the Dukes Invitational in New Jersey for its men's and women's cross country teams.

Mary Washington also adjusted the schedule for Saturday events: a field hockey game against Wittenberg was cancelled, the men's soccer game at Virginia Wesleyan was cancelled, and the volleyball match at North Carolina Wesleyan was postponed until Sunday. The cross country meet at Lebanon Valley remains on Saturday.

Virginia Wesleyan cancelled all athletics activities, including practices, on Saturday, including the field hockey game against Wilson.

North Carolina-Wilmington cancelled the Seahawk Invitational for its men's and women's cross country team and high school teams. The Friday-Saturday event will not be rescheduled.
