posted by: Ryan Powell
In today's rough economic times, should colleges and universities be signing top coaches to hefty contracts?
According to a recent USA Today report, football coaches at top Division I schools earn an average of $950,000 per year. Alabama's Nick Saban will earn $32 million during his 8-year contract. Texas Tech reportedly offered head coach Mike Leach a five-year deal worth $12.1 million. Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy signed a new seven-year contract that will pay him $15.7 million.
In 1999, five college football coaches made at least $1 million a year. Now more than 50 coaches make that much. Why?

The National Football League said Tuesday it will layoff more than 10 percent of the league's staff as part of a cost-cutting plan. The move will eliminate about 150 jobs over the next 60 days. The layoffs do not include jobs at teams, which are controlled by individual clubs.
Winning the Heisman doesn't guarantee NFL success - Dec 10, 2008 | 13:47:20
A story in the New York Times profiles the eight Heisman winners enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame--a fairly small number when you consider the Heisman has been around since 1935. Barry Sanders was the last Heisman winner to be inducted. The story also points out that Heisman-winning quarterbacks haven't had much success at the next level.

The previous test for the substance, which aids in muscle recovery and development, was done through a blood test. This new process will be tested for effectiveness before being adopted by sports agencies, but many are hopeful the urine tests will be less invasive and more reliable than the current HGH blood test.

Trouble finding the end zone? - Dec 10, 2008 | 10:53:50
During the snow-covered Virginia Division 4 state championship game Saturday Broad Run running back T.J. Peeler thought he scored a touchdown, but was actually only on the five-yard line. He dropped the ball to celebrate and the other team recovered it. Luckily, Broad Run still won the game, 13-0. Anyone who has ever tried to park their car after a good snow feels Peeler's pain. Those pesky white lines camouflage very easily.
