One of the year’s busiest weeks for championships has arrived, as nine team titles will be decided before Memorial Day.
Included are all three divisions’ men’s lacrosse titles, which as usual will be contested at the same site -- this year, Gillette Stadium near Boston. The Division I women’s lacrosse crown also is up for grabs this weekend in Towson, Maryland.
It’s also a big week in track and field, as the Divisions II and III men’s and women’s championships get underway Thursday. Cal Poly Pomona is hosting Division II competition, while Division III’s contenders return to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
The fairways and greens of the University of New Mexico Championships Golf Course also are in the spotlight as the setting for the Division I Women’s Golf Championships, teeing off tomorrow.
It’s also a big week for administrators of athletics programs in all three NCAA divisions, as the first of the Association’s two annual Regional Rules Seminars is under way. More than 1,300 preregistered for the Boston gathering, indicating an all-time attendance record for the event, which features 57 different sessions. The preregistration figure includes more than 250 registrants from Division III institutions who are expected to participate in today’s Town Hall Meeting addressing membership growth.
The holiday weekend brings the annual National Student-Athlete Development Conference. The gathering provides approximately 700 student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions with a forum to discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also offering them an opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
