In a rematch of last year’s championship game, Minnesota Duluth changed the results to win the National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey Championship title, 4-0, over two-time defending champion Wisconsin.

The Bulldogs earned their fourth championship in eight years with Saturday’s win. Coach Shannon Miller said the future looks bright for her team, led by sophomore goaltender Kim Martin and freshman forward Haley Irwin.

“Today we pulled together almost a perfect hockey game for 60 minutes,” she said. “We have such a young team. Every single time there was a hurdle in front of us, we cleared it. Every time there was a wall, we went around it. And when you watch your team do that, you know you can win a national championship.”

Martin, only the second goaltender to blank the opposing team in championship history, carried much of the load in the title game for Minnesota Duluth, but her teammates provided plenty of offense to ensure the title. Irwin had the first goal of the game at 19:22, emerging from a scrum to push the puck into the net. Though the goal was contested by Wisconsin, a lengthy video review kept the score on the board.

The Bulldogs’ second goal came in the second period off sophomore forward Emmanuelle Blais. Junior Sara O’Toole, denied a scoring opportunity by Wisconsin goaltender Jessie Vetter in the first period, made good on a steal in the second period, sending the puck airborne over Vetter’s shoulder.

Protecting their goal even during four power-plays in the final period, Minnesota Duluth held the Badgers scoreless while senior Karine Demeule made the last goal of the night into an empty net with less than three minutes on the clock. Wisconsin coach Mark Johnson had pulled Vetter in favor of an extra player.

Minnesota Duluth ended the season with a school-best record of 34-3-1. The Badgers finish their season -- a remarkable one in which it entered the championship unseeded and beat top-seed Harvard in the semifinals -- 29-9-3.

The game, played in front of what felt like a home crowd at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, was perfect for Minnesota Duluth’s Demeule, the only senior on the team.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s like a dream,” she said. “A lot of players wish for this. I got to win a national championship at home. It’s perfect. It’s like a dream.”
