Memphis cruised through the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight to earn a berth in this weekend’s Final Four, but a large percentage of Double-A Zone readers don’t believe the Tigers can win it all.

In a poll on the NCAA’s official blog last week, 67 percent of respondents said that a team that shoots free throws as poorly as Memphis cannot win a national championship. The remaining 33 percent don’t believe the charity strike will be a factor for the Tigers.

An anonymous commenter recalled the close game between Memphis and Tennessee earlier this season and asked: “Didn't Memphis lose out on their perfect season because of free-throw shooting?”

Howard Smith says Memphis can win it all, but it’s going to be a challenge. “Obviously there is still a chance that Memphis will be able to win the national title despite its poor free-throw shooting. However, this weakness certainly does not help its cause, especially when most games from here on out will be close in the late stages.”

Finally, JM says that poor free-throw shooting alone won’t account for Memphis’ elimination. “There are way too many parts of the game to say that it hinges on just free throws.”

Each week, the Double-A Zone offers a new poll to provide fans of intercollegiate athletics with an opportunity to have their voices heard.
