The week on the Double-A Zone:
Indiana basketball extravaganza
The Double-A Zone’s Howard Smith and Ryan Powell will be attending 11 games in a four-day span this weekend and they will cover it on the Double-A Zone (the NCAA's official blog) and The NCAA News.
Economy, BCS generate discussion at intercollegiate athletics
Last week, I attended the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York, where many of the big issues facing higher education and college sports were discussed. During the two-day conference, some of the most powerful people on college campuses shared their opinions, including college presidents and athletics directors. Frankly, it was fascinating to hear them speak in such an open and candid environment.
How does the economic situation effect intercollegiate athletics?
Is it a good idea to have off-campus sports venues?
Many athletics departments are forced to decide between hosting sporting events at on-campus sites versus bigger off-campus venues. Fairfield, a Division I school of 3,300 students in Connecticut, is one university that has made the decision to play the majority of its home men's basketball games at an off-campus arena. This home-away-from-home venue is the Arena at Harbor Yard, located in Bridgeport, approximately five miles from campus.
If you were making the decisions at Fairfield, where would you host your home basketball games?
Dreaming of pay-for-play
I had a dream last night that I think might be a nightmare.
It was January 8, and Florida was lining up to play Oklahoma in the BCS title game. I had some of my Florida alumni friends over and we were rubbing our gator heads for good luck when suddenly, the officials - instead of flipping a coin - decided to have the teams flip uniforms.
Experience the Jimmy V Classic from Madison Square Garden
Last week, I attended the Jimmy V Classic at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The evening featured four marquee basketball teams with the ultimate goal of raising awareness and money for cancer research.
