The NCAA News

This week on the Double-A Zone:

• Should a coach be held accountable for the Academic Progress Rate (APR) of his or her team? The Division I Board of Directors wants the Committee on Academic Performance to develop the idea.  Weigh in on the debate.

• Do fantasy sports threaten student-athlete amateurism? This football season marks the first time names have accompanied student-athlete statistics in fantasy games. In the past, fantasy producers, including NCAA broadcast partner CBS, were permitted to use only the statistics and numbers of student-athletes. Does the change mean we’re moving toward a professional athlete culture, or is the threat overblown?

• Concussions are a major concern for all college sports, including football. During last weekend’s game against Ohio State, Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark was sidelined because coaches and trainers believed he suffered a concussion after a hard hit by the Ohio State defense. Some high school teams have used technology to combat concussion in their athletes. Is it time college teams explore new methods for detecting these life-threatening injuries? What can be done to better protect student-athletes from concussions?

• I come in defense of Lubbock. NCAA Managing Director for Publishing and native Texan David Pickle anticipates that Lubbock will fall victim to snarky announcers during this weekend’s game between Texas and Texas Tech. Fear not Lubbock! You have a friend in Pickle.
