Double-A Zone Rewind

In case you've been sleeping and haven't had a chance to log on to the NCAA's official blog, here's what you missed this week:

Apparently, the Kentucky men's basketball program offered a verbal commitment to an eighth grader who has yet to decide on where he will play his high school ball. Most of us know that verbal commitments don't mean a thing, so why are they even part of the college basketball landscape?

The fourth year of Academic Progress Rate (APR) data was released on Tuesday and the numbers are encouraging. While men's basketball programs are still not where they need to be, the academic performance of baseball and football programs is trending in the right direction. In all, 218 teams from 123 institutions will be penalized.

A student-athlete from Georgia Tech died last month as a result of morphine toxicity. Some have vehemently argued that the NCAA should test student-athletes more stringently for street drugs, but is that really the responsibility of an athletics organization?
