The NCAA's official blog took its show on the road this week, offering content from the Gender Equity and Issues Forum in Boston. NCAA President Myles Brand conducted his weekly Double-A Zone podcast on site and Adelphi Assistant Director of Athletics Deneé Rivera-Barracato was featured on the blog’s Campus Connection podcast.
Although coaches in professional baseball are wearing helmets when they take the field, the protective measure hasn’t made headway at the high school and college levels. An interesting conversation took place on the Double-A Zone this week regarding the topic and varying viewpoints were shared. One commenter wrote “There's no question having coaches wear helmets would be a relatively cheap and easy way to significantly lower the risk of injury from a blow to the head. The display of sportsmanship exhibited by Central Washington’s Mallory Holtman when she carried Western Oregon’s Sara Tucholsky around the bases last week was another hot topic on the NCAA’s blog. Tucholsky hit her first career homerun against Central Washington and tore her ACL while rounding the bases. Holtman picked Tucholsky up and helped her touch all the bases so the round-tripper would count.
The Double-A Zone asked whether or not increased childhood obesity will impact the future of intercollegiate athletics. Will overweight adolescents reduce the pool of talented prospective student-athletes? Will injuries be more prevalent in the future?
Make sure to log on to the Double-A Zone each and every day to get your fill on the latest happenings in intercollegiate athletics.
