The NCAA has produced a new brochure to help colleges and universities enhance their diversity and inclusion efforts.
The brochure, NCAA Best Practices for Promoting Diversity and Inclusion, was released during the 2008 Convention in Nashville and is based on the results of a survey recommended by the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee in the fall of 2006.
The best practices reflect programs and initiatives that have been implemented on campuses across the Association. Suggestions and ideas included in the brochure cover multiple areas of emphasis such as university-wide diversity efforts; creation and implementation of a diversity strategic/action plan; professional development opportunities; and recruitment, hiring and retention.
As part of the DLSPC-commissioned survey, institutional and conference senior woman administrators, the Divisions I, II and III national Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, and directors of athletics in all three divisions were asked to share initiatives they felt had the most impact on promoting, fostering and supporting diversity and inclusion for student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Responses from the survey were used to develop the brochure.
A copy of the brochure and a PowerPoint presentation about the initiative that was presented at Convention will be placed online by mid-February. To request hard copies of the brochure, contact Nick Castro, coordinator for diversity and inclusion, at ncastro@ncaa.org.
