The Ohio State women’s fencing team entered this weekend’s National Collegiate Fencing Championships ranked No. 1, while the men were ranked No. 2. Together they claimed the program’s third national team title.

Ohio State edged Notre Dame, 185-176, March 16 to give the Buckeyes their 57th national title overall. Columbia was third, followed by defending national champion Penn State. St. John's (New York) finished fifth.

The top-ranked Ohio State women’s squad set the stage with a strong performance that registered 101 points en route to the national championship. The Buckeyes’ Siobhan Byrne earned the top seed in the medal round for the sabre and advanced to the final to face Notre Dame freshman Sarah Borrmann in a back-and-forth match. Byrne took a quick 4-0 lead before Borrmann responded to even the score, 5-5, and eventually pull ahead for an 8-7 advantage at the break. Borrmann maintained the lead and went on to capture the women’s sabre title, 15-11. Columbia’s Emily Jacobson, the 2005 champion, was third.

In women’s foil, Ohio State also had the top seed in the medal round in Oksana Dmytruk. The freshman defeated Nicole Ross of Columbia to advance to the final round, where she was matched up against the 2007 national runner-up from St. John’s, Monika Golebiewski. Dmytruk could not protect the narrow 2-0 advantage she maintained after the break, however. Golebiewski came away with a 15-7 victory. Columbia’s Ross claimed third.

Although Alexandra Obrazcova of Ohio State captured the top seed in the women’s epee medal round, Notre Dame fencers Kelley Hurley and Ewa Nelip took first and third in the discipline, sandwiching Reka Szele from St. John’s, who took second. Obrazcova finished fourth after falling to Hurley in the semifinals and to Nelip in the third-place contest.

For the men, the Buckeyes’ Andras Horanyi repeated as men’s foil individual champion, besting Pennsylvania’s Ronald Berkowsky for the second straight year. Horanyi’s 14-7 win represented a far more comfortable margin of victory than last year’s 13-12 overtime win against Berkowsky, who entered this year’s medal round as the top seed. Horanyi, the second seed, became the fifth straight Buckeyes fencer to earn the foil championship. Boaz Ellis won three straight from 2003 to 2005. Kurt Getz of Columbia defeated Penn State’s Nicholas Chinman for third place.

The gold medal contest in sabre featured Mikhail Momtselidze of Ohio State against Jeff Spear of Columbia. The match up was a replay from Rounds 1-7, which resulted in the only blemish on Momtselidze's 22-1 early-round record. In the final match, Spear once again had the upper hand, gaining an early 6-4 advantage and never relinquishing the lead. Spear won the match, 15-10.

In men’s epee, Slava Zingerman from Wayne State (Michigan) beat Arthur Urman of Penn State to claim the individual title. Zingerman, the No. 3 seed entering the medal rounds, got by Stanley Vaksman of St. John’s in the semifinals, while Urman took down top seed, Princeton’s Graham Wicas, who finished third in the event.
