Academic panel forms five subcommittees on issues
The Division I Men’s Basketball Academic Enhancement Group has appointed five subcommittees to study specific issues related to improved academic performance in the sport.
The 30-member group met in person for the first time in August and began to explore factors that contribute to men’s basketball’s low APR standing and graduation rates. Members decided then that the subcommittee approach was the most efficient way to complete the group’s overall charge.
Five presidents have been named to chair the subcommittees indicated in parentheses. They are Greg Geoffroy of Iowa State University (transfer issues), Walt Harrison of the University of Hartford (the 0-for-2 phenomenon related to APR), Sidney Ribeau of Bowling Green State University (academic preparation and support), Gretchen Bataille of University of North Texas (coach/player relationships) and Steve Weber of San Diego State University (playing and practice seasons).
Convention
Registration site opens; education events planned
Registration for the 2008 NCAA Convention in Nashville is now open.
The Convention will be January 10-14 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, and will begin with events designed to educate and activate participants.
The first NCAA Colloquium on College Sports, an initiative designed to address a void in research activity related to sport in the context of higher education, will be January 10-11.
On Thursday, January 10, the Association also is hosting the NCAA Hazing Prevention Summit. The summit will present the latest hazing research and prevention strategies and offer a forum for coaches, student-athletes and others on the front lines to share their stories. The summit will also provide resources for administrators to develop policies and programming initiatives. Organizers hope the event will serve as a call to action for institutions nationwide.
On Friday, January 11, the NCAA will sponsor the Symposium on Women of Color in College Sports, featuring the unique experiences and challenges faced by women of color who participate and work in intercollegiate athletics. Speakers will discuss various topics with the goal of increasing opportunities in intercollegiate athletics for women of color at all levels.
The NCAA will also host a 5-kilometer run at Convention for the first time. Participation is limited to attendees and exhibitors only and will be run on the Gaylord Opryland property.
Registration for all the events can be completed at www.ncaaconvention.com.
