Sports committees
Summer sports meetings result in variety of actions
NCAA sports committees’ actions during summer meetings have been reported in the online edition of The NCAA News, including these actions (with online publication date).
The Division I Men’s Basketball Committee recommended ways to enhance the opening-round game of the Division I men’s championship, including awarding an additional “unit” in the basketball fund for the game’s winner (subject to approval by the Division I Board of Directors) and announcing the game’s participants earlier in the day on Selection Sunday (July 19).
The Women’s Bowling Committee recommended an increase in the number of officials overseeing championships play and also recommended that all officials be paid a fee for their services (July 26).
The Men’s Gymnastics Committee voted to adopt the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) code of points, including a scoring change that will allow student-athletes to receive a higher score than the traditional “perfect 10” (July 16).
The Women’s Gymnastics Committee instituted a two-year cycle for rules modifications, under which it proposed several modifications and agreed another rules review will not occur until the committee’s 2009 meeting (July 11).
The Divisions II and III Women’s Lacrosse Committees are proposing holding both divisions’ championships at a common site in 2009 and 2010 (August 1).
The Men’s and Women’s Skiing Committee is recommending a new way to determine regions’ earned berths in the national championships that accounts for performance of the total championships field rather than the two-year performances of the top 20 skiers only (July 31).
The Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee is recommending adding combined events at indoor championships and discontinuing the women’s outdoor 3,000-meter run (August 3)
The Women’s Water Polo Committee will continue to consider a change in the date formula to move the 2008 championship away from Mother’s Day weekend (July 20).
Rules committee actions
The Baseball Rules Committee designated pace of play as its main point of emphasis, and identified the batter’s box rule, handling of conferences and speeding the time between innings and during pitching changes as areas in need of improvement (July 18).
The Softball Rules Committee expressed concern that some bat manufacturers may not have controlled the bat-to-ball exit speed of their products (July 16).

Division III
‘Getting in the Game’ site features up-to-date content
A new video-based Web site has replaced the “Getting in the Game” CD-ROM distributed during recent years to Division III institutions.
The Web site (accessible at www.ncaa.org/divisionIII) permits student-athletes and institutional personnel to access its content (including educational videos) from anywhere and easily share the information.
The Web site features a newly filmed Summary of Regulations video for use at beginning-of-the-year compliance meetings and a quick overview of Division III bylaws for coaches, in addition to other features that previously have been on the CD-ROM.
The Web site’s purpose is to relay and explain timely information for student-athletes, coaches and staff.
