Golf, lacrosse and tennis committees hold meetings
NCAA sports committees’s actions during summer meetings have been reported in the online edition of The NCAA News, including these recent actions (with online publication date).
The Division I Men’s Golf Committee recommended expanding the number of regional sites at the golf championships from three to six (August 14).
The Division II Men’s Golf Committee discussed future changes in the regional championship structure and the Division III Men’s Golf Committee reviewed the new format used at this year’s championships (August 14).
The Divisions I, II and III Men’s Lacrosse Committees are looking at a variety of ways to enhance the championship weekend for participants and fans, including putting more emphasis on the Memorial Day holiday during the events (August 21).
The Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee voted against using the regular-duty ball during the women’s championship, preferring instead to continue using the heavy-duty ball (August 10).
The Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committees will seek an increase in operational expense stipends for hosts of championship rounds from the Division III Championships Committee, citing expansion of fields through automatic qualification (August 10).
The committees’ full reports are accessible through the View All Association Updates link at www.ncaa.org.
Division II
Council amends proposal addressing text messaging
The Division II Presidents Council is backing an amendment to its proposal to ban text messaging that would allow text and instant messaging for prospective student-athletes who have signed a National Letter of Intent or have signed a written offer of financial aid or admission from the institution.
Division III
Moratorium on accepting new members will expire
The Division III Presidents Council agreed to allow a 2½-year moratorium on accepting applications from institutions wishing to join the division to expire at the end of this year.
The Council’s action is expected to permit a more accurate assessment of potential future growth in Division III — information that would be useful in a current Association-wide study of the NCAA membership structure.
