Leadership Institute seeks applicants for joint program
The NCAA Leadership Institute is accepting applications to participate in its first Joint Institute (male and female) beginning in spring 2007. The institute is designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level people of color in athletics administration at NCAA member institutions and conference offices.
The institute prepares diverse leaders through a leadership training and skills development experience designed to enhance job-related competencies in selected areas through completion of four professional development sessions, practical work and a week-long intensive workshop.
Those interested must apply online at www.ncaa.org and submit a letter of recommendation to be considered for the program. Upon completion of the institute, participants will be able to receive a scholarship for $3,000 to defray costs incurred during the 12-month process.
The registration deadline is April 6. Because space is limited, early application is encouraged. The application is accessible via the”Diversity” link under the “About the NCAA” tab at the NCAA Web site, then by clicking on “Leadership Institute” under the heading “Diversity Programs.”
Football
Fans smash attendance record by 1.7 million
NCAA football attendance set a new standard during the 2006 season as 615 schools combined for a total gate of 47,909,313, shattering the 2003 record by 1,764,774 fans.
The permanent addition of the 12th regular-season game in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) certainly had the potential to boost total attendance to an all-time high, but perhaps a more significant indication of the sport’s popularity is that the average-per-game mark was broken in both the FBS and for all divisions combined.
The average number of fans attending an FBS game in 2006 was 46,249, better than the record mark of 46,039 per game in 2005. For all divisions combined, the 2006 per-game average of 14,124 topped the 22-year-old record of 13,852 set in 1984 and was a one-year jump of nearly 1,000 more fans per game than in 2005.

Interim scheduling plan offers regionalization relief
The Division II Championships Committee approved an interim scheduling plan to accommodate those schools that may have already scheduled contests under a new regionalization model whose implementation recently was delayed by the Division II Presidents Council.
The interim plan applies to men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball — sports that were scheduled to implement the new model in 2007-08.
Under the interim plan, any additional contests that need to be scheduled in those sports for next year should be scheduled against schools in the current regional alignment (in other words, the alignment in place for 2006-07).
The committee defined contests that will be considered in-region under the interim scheduling plan.
