The NCAA News
After 10 seasons at the helm of the Kentucky men’s basketball program, Tubby Smith has been named the 16th men’s basketball coach at Minnesota.
Smith served as Kentucky’s coach from 1997-2007, leading the Wildcats to the 1998 national championship, four Elite Eight appearances, six Sweet Sixteen appearances, five Southeastern Conference titles and five SEC tournament titles.
After four years as a student-athlete at High Point, Smith began his coaching career at his former high school. He moved on to become an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth and South Carolina before receiving his first head coaching job at Tulsa in 1991.
After the 1994-95 season, Smith became the first black head coach at Georgia and led the Bulldogs to a 45-19 mark during his two-year stint.
Smith’s teams have posted 14 consecutive 20-win seasons and have had 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament.
