Kristen Smith has been named director of athletics at Kalamazoo. Smith had served as director of women’s athletics, associate athletic trainer and assistant professor of physical education at the school since 2004.

Smith joined the athletics department in 1991 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. She was an assistant softball coach in 1992 and 1993, and became Kalamazoo’s first full-time athletic trainer in 1994.

After taking over as head softball coach in 1997, Smith led the Hornets to consecutive third-place finishes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. She stepped down from her post in 1998 to devote more of her time to athletic training.

Smith earned her bachelor’s degree from Hope in 1988, and after graduation, spent three seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at her alma mater. During her tenure, the program won the 1990 national championship. Smith received a master’s degree from Western Michigan in 1992.
