Schiner to step down at New Jersey City
The NCAA News
Longtime New Jersey City Athletics Director Lawrence R. Schiner announced plans to retire, effective July 1, after 40 years of service to the university.
Schiner, just the third athletics director in the school’s history, began his duties in 1977 after having served as head men’s basketball coach and assistant athletics director. In nine seasons as head basketball coach, he led teams to two New Jersey State College Athletic Conference titles and two NCAA College Division Championship tournament appearances. He also spent three seasons as head men’s tennis coach.
During his tenure as athletics director, Schiner spearheaded the development of the John J. Moore Fitness Center and the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, launched the school’s athletics hall of fame and initiated an extensive community-outreach program.
A former member of the NCAA Council/Division III Steering Committee and the Division III Men’s Basketball, Championships, Nominating and Interpretations Committees, Schiner currently chairs the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships Committee and Eastern Regional Football Selection Committee.
Schiner received the 2007 Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association and was honored as the 2003-04 Division III Southeast Region NACDA AD of the Year and the 2003 Jostens ECAC Male Administrator of the Year.
