O’Reilly retires after 38 years in coaching

Henry “Irish” O’Reilly, the longest-serving head coach in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, announced his retirement from coaching the Lewis baseball team, effective July 1.
O’Reilly accepted a position as special assistant to the vice president for university advancement. In his new job, he will focus on major gift and athletics fund-raising.
O’Reilly coached at Lewis for 29 years during a 38-year coaching career. O’Reilly’s coaching record at Lewis, 982-771-8, boasts the most wins of any baseball coach in school history. He is eighth in victories in Division II.
Just before his last season as a coach, O’Reilly was selected for induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He will be inducted in January 2008, joining another former Lewis coach, Gordie Gillespie. He was named confernece coach of the year six times and regional coach of the year five times.
As a student-athlete, O’Reilly was a starting pitcher for Illinois State University and finished second on the school’s career strikeouts list with 286. He played three seasons in the minor leagues.
