Chancellors and presidents
Renu Khator was selected as chancellor of the University of Houston system and president of Houston. Khator had been provost and senior vice president at South Florida ? George Bradley was named president of Paine.
Directors of athletics
Midwestern State selected Charlie Carr as director of athletics ? Louisville signed Tom Jurich to a contract extension ? Nebraska released Steve Pederson from his contract. Tom Osborne was named interim director of athletics. Osborne spent 25 years at the helm of the Cornhusker football program, winning 255 games and three national titles during his career ? Lynne Robinson was named director of athletics at Mount St. Mary?s. The daughter of former Athletics Director Jim Phelan, Robinson has been serving as the interim director of athletics since July ? Florida State representative Bill Proctor was selected as interim director of athletics at Florida State. He will replace David Hart Jr. when he departs December 31.
Associate directors of athletics
Kent State promoted Cathy Oonnell, Bob Heller, John Faulstick and Jen Kulics. O?Donnell?s new title is executive associate athletics director, Heller is senior associate athletics director and Faulstick and Kulics are both associate directors of athletics ? Mark Livingston was promoted to associate athletics director for development and executive director of the Stinger Athletic Association at Sacramento State ? Bill Macriss was promoted to deputy athletics director at Sacramento State. Macriss has been with the athletics department since 1996 ? Kim Duyst was promoted to associate director of athletics at Cal State Stanislaus. Duyst will relinquish her role as head cross country and track and field coach on November 1.
Coaches
Baseball ? Colby College named Dale Plummer head baseball coach. Plummer pitched in the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets organizations before becoming pitching coach for the Mules two years ago. He replaces former head coach Tom Dexter, who will remain as an assistant baseball coach and defensive coordinator for the football team.
Men?s basketball ? Mark Vershaw was hired as head coach at Monmouth. The leading scorer on the Wisconsin team that reached the Final Four in 2000, Vershaw recently served as an assistant at Cornell ? After spending 24 years at the helm of the Knox program, Tim Heimann will coach his final season this winter. Heimann will move to the college?s fund-raising and alumni relations office.
Women?s basketball ? Drew hired Gail Gilchrest to lead its program. She replaces Karin Harvey, who accepted the head post at Montclair State.
Women?s basketball assistant ? Washington selected Betsy Butterick to be video coordinator.
Men?s and women?s cross country ? Jesse Torres resigned his position at Notre Dame De Namur University ? Diljeet Taylor was tabbed to lead the Cal State Stanislaus programs.
Men?s and women?s gymnastics assistant ? Craig Ballard was selected as an assistant coach with the Rhode Island women?s program.
Men?s and women?s skiing ? Scott MacPherson was tabbed to lead the programs at Boston College.
Softball ? Cabrini selected Lisa McGregor to lead its program. McGregor was a standout player at Pittsburgh.
Men?s and women?s tennis ? Cal State Stanislaus reinstated its women?s tennis program and named Varek Visaraga head coach.
Men?s and women?s track and field ? Cal State Stanislaus selected Geoff Bradshaw.
Men?s and women?s water polo ? Maureen O?Toole-Purcell was tabbed as a volunteer assistant with the California women?s program.
Staff
Academic services ? Neci Charleston was named academic coordinator for basketball at Bradley. She will work with the men?s and women?s programs.
Facilities ? Akron promoted Brooke Croshier-Sidebotham to athletics facilities and operations manager. She had been athletics coordinator of events and operations.
Sports information ? Quinnipiac tabbed Ken Sweeten.
Sports information assistants ? Detroit hired P.J. Gradowski ? Southeastern Louisiana tabbed Charlie Gillingham as assistant sports information director. Gillingham recently served as an intern with the Atlanta Braves.
Conferences
Brad Walker was hired as associate commissioner for operations and chief operating officer of the Ohio Valley Conference. Walker spent the last seven years at the West Coast Conference, serving as director of communications, assistant commissioner and associate commissioner.
Deaths
Former Army football player DeWitt Coulter died October 2 at the age of 83. Coulter was an all-American tackle on Army?s 1945 national championship team ? Former Tennessee football student-athlete Robert Pulliam died after a battle with cancer. He was 54 ? Former Wofford football coach Conley Snidow Jr. died October 7 ? Former Georgia basketball standout Alec Kessler died after collapsing in a pickup game last week. Kessler, who played four seasons with the NBA?s Miami Heat, became an orthopedic surgeon after his playing days ? Former Louisiana Tech baseball coach Pat Patterson died October 11 ? Former Tulane football player Max McGee died Saturday at the age of 75. McGee scored the first points in Super Bowl history as a member of the Green Bay Packers in 1967 ? Doug Pollard, head track and field coach at Moravian, died October 22. Pollard had served as head coach of the programs since 1984, winning 30 conference titles during his tenure. He was also a professor of physical education ? Former Delaware baseball standout Brian Fleury died October 19 after a 20-year battle with Hodgkin?s disease. An all-conference catcher who started his career at Georgia Tech, he also earned academic all-American honors during his time at Delaware. Fleury was 40.
