Reginald Avery was named president at Coppin State … UC Santa Cruz selected George Blumenthal as chancellor.
Directors of athletics
North Dakota has tabbed Betty Ralston and Steve Brekke as co-acting athletics directors to fill in for Tom Buning, who is on a leave of absence … Bill Sullivan and Ashlee Kelly have been appointed co-interim athletics directors at Mercy.
Associate director of athletics
Mercy promoted Drew Brown.
Assistant directors of athletics
Lori Kwiatkowski was appointed assistant director of athletics at Felician. She will also serve as compliance officer and assistant softball coach … Lebanon Valley promoted Lauren Frankford to assistant director of athletics. Frankford will continue to lead the women’s soccer program … Tony Trombetta was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports medicine at Southeastern Louisiana.
Coaches
Baseball assistants – UC Riverside hired Nathan Choate as its pitching coach. Choate recently coached at UC Irvine … Tom Lipari was hired as a volunteer assistant at Michigan State. He will work with the Spartan pitching staff.
Men’s basketball – George Washington extended the contract of Karl Hobbs through 2012. Hobbs has led the program to a 114-65 record since being hired in 2001 … Ohio State extended the contract of Thad Matta through 2016.
Men’s basketball assistants – Florida International tabbed Kevin Fricke, who spent the last 11 seasons as an assistant at Arkansas-Little Rock … Victor Ebong and Mike Winiecki were added at Wright State. Scott Woods was named director of basketball operations for the program while Lucas McKay was chosen as an administrative assistant … St. John’s (New York) tabbed Billy Singleton as director of basketball operations … After seven years as an assistant with Purdue, Cuonzo Martin was promoted to associate head coach. Martin played at Purdue from 1991-95 … Illinois added Jerrance Howard to its staff … Lorenzo Watkins was added to the staff at Campbell.
Women’s basketball – Georgia Tech signed women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph to a two-year extension. In four seasons with the program, Joseph has compiled a 62-56 record.
Women’s basketball assistants – Wright State added Joshua Snyder as an assistant coach, Erin Anderson as director of basketball operations and Dawn Larabee as an administrative assistant … Ana Valtierra has been added to the Texas-El Paso staff … Lauren Allen was named an assistant at Furman … Courtney Graham was chosen as an assistant at Holy Cross … Kerry Chapin was named to the Plattsburgh State staff in an interim capacity.
Football assistants – Texas Tech defensive coordinator Lyle Setencich stepped down from his post. Ruffin McNeill was named interim defensive coordinator.
Men’s and women’s golf – After five seasons and three Commonwealth Coast Conference championships, David Pierce has resigned his post as golf coach at Wentworth. Bob Giusti was named the team’s new head coach and Joe Peck has been chosen as his assistant.
Men’s and women’s golf assistant – Zach Guthrie was added to the men’s staff at Illinois. Guthrie graduated from Western Illinois in 2007.
Men’s and women’s gymnastics – Shannon Cornicelli was hired to lead the Rhode Island College women’s team and Susie Taylor will serve as her assistant. Cornicelli takes over for Bob Nannig.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Westfield State selected Jerry Keefe as head men’s coach. Westfield State will return to varsity status after a 20-year hiatus.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant – Former Niagara goaltender Allison Rutledge was tabbed to work with the women’s program at Wayne State.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant – Bryan Molk was selected as an assistant with the Wagner men’s program.
Men’s and women’s soccer – DePauw men’s soccer coach Page Cotton will hang up his whistle at the end of the season. Cotton has led the Tiger program since 1969, the same year he graduated from Springfield. During his 39-year tenure, Cotton has compiled a record 381-186-33 and has led DePauw to eight Division III tournament appearances.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistant – San Jose State selected Jeff Jenkins as a volunteer assistant with its women’s team.
Softball – Lauren Peloquin resigned her post at Rutgers-Newark. Peloquin finished her two-year stint with the program 30-46 … After 17 years leading the softball program at John Jay, Patrick Malia has announced his resignation. Malia won 215 games during his career and led the Bloodhounds to the 2000 Division III tournament.
Softball assistants – Purdue hired Boo Gillette, a three-time all-Big Ten catcher for the Wisconsin softball program, as assistant coach … Lani Shaffer and Tina McCauley were named to the Bowling Green staff.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistant – Jason Memont signed on as an assistant at South Carolina.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Nate Reinhart was hired at Wright State … Ferris State selected Alex Palladino to lead both tennis programs. Palladino competed at Kalamazoo from 1984-87 and led the Hornets to national championships in 1986 and 1987. He twice won national titles in doubles competition as a collegian … Gregory Coache was named head coach of the women’s program at Southern New Hampshire. Coache has served as a high school coach for the past 10 years.
Men’s and women’s tennis assistant – Troy Hahn will join the men’s staff at Purdue.
Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – New York U. tabbed Chris Pinto as a men’s assistant.
Wrestling assistant – Tyron Woodley was selected at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville
Staff
Business manager – Darryl Bullock was elevated to interim business manager at Mercy.
Compliance – Wright State hired Julie Owen as director of compliance.
Sports information assistant – South Florida hired Jeff Wuerth as assistant sports information director.
Strength and conditioning – Jason Bradford was chosen as head strength and conditioning coach at Wright State.
Ticket operations – Darin Cronebach was named ticket manager at Wright State.
Corrections
In the August 27 edition of The NCAA News, it incorrectly stated that Sacramento State women’s volleyball coach Debby Colberg had resigned her post as head coach after 31 years and 799 victories. Colberg announced that she will retire at the end of the season. She will be inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December … In the September 10 edition of The NCAA News, Davidson College was misidentified in the Division I Notes section. The school unveiled a new Web site last month.
Notables
Host Communications Inc. named Mike Chires general manager of its sports marketing property at Michigan.
Conferences
The Southeastern Conference promoted Chuck Dunlap to associate director of media relations.
Associations
The National Football Foundation added eight members to its national board of directors: Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, Michael Moe, Kevin Plank, Roger Williams, Jim Delany, Mike Slive and Deborah Yow.
Deaths
Former Delaware cross country and track standout Kim Mitchell Kogan died September 11. The five-time East Coast Conference individual champion was 44 … Former William and Mary football player Garrard Ramsey died September 16 at the age of 87. Ramsey was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in 1978 … Former Bradley basketball standout David Humerickhouse died September 14 at the age of 83. Humerickhouse was a two-time all-American and was inducted into the university’s basketball hall of fame … Former Bradley golf and swimming and diving coach Jim Spink died September 23. Spink, who also assisted with football, was 80.
