Irma Garcia was named athletics director at St. Francis (New York), becoming the first Hispanic woman to lead a Division I program … Bill Chaves was named director of athletics at Eastern Washington … Rick Espeset was hired as director of athletics at Manchester. Currently the school’s baseball coach, Espeset led Manchester to the 2004 Division III finals … Steve Bruning was named interim director of athletics at Capital. He replaces Roger Welsh, who will become special assistant to the provost for athletics advancement.

Matt Mountain was named associate director of athletics at Wisconsin-Parkside … Columbia named Jennifer Strawley associate athletics director for intercollegiate sports programs.

Women’s basketball assistants — San Jose State added John Langston as an assistant coach and KC Hilgenkamp as coordinator of operations … Maine added Justin Rees, Rita Sullivan and Kelley Gibson to its staff … Taira Roth was hired at Lake Superior State. She replaces Tethnie Forbes … Charette Guthrie was hired at Guilford … Stephen F. Austin hired Jaye Nayreau … Chicago appointed Molly Dullea assistant women’s basketball coach. She spent the last two years at Wesleyan (Connecticut) and played at St. Anselm from 2000-04. She also coached at the prep level.
Men’s and women’s cross country — Stephanie Reilly will be the interim coach of the Bryant cross country and track and field programs. She replaces Trish Hillery … Maija Rohde was selected as head coach of the women’s program at Cal State Bakersfield. She succeeds interim coach Robert Boyles.
Men’s and women’s cross country assistant — Four-time Olympian Johnny Gray was hired as an assistant coach at Pepperdine.
Equestrian — Stephanie Kurau was promoted to head equestrian coach at St. Joseph’s (Long Island). Alison Mooney was tabbed to be her assistant.
Field hockey — Colleen Carney was named head coach at Arcadia.
Football — Wayne Perry will retire from his post at Hanover after the 2007 season. He has 172 wins during a 25-year career with the program … Nevada extended the contract of Chris Ault through 2011.
Football assistants — Guilford named Mike Harris, Eric Massey and Joe Mitskas assistant coaches. Michael Vite was promoted to assistant head coach and Chris Barnette and Josh Sutton were selected as student assistants … Bentley promoted Mark DeBrito to offensive coordinator.
Men’s and women’s golf — William Smith tabbed George Dornberger to serve as head coach. He succeeds interim coach Michelle Walsh … Chris Pierson will replace Jodee Schaben as head women’s coach at Central (Iowa). Pierson will also serve as assistant men’s basketball coach.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant — Sara Simard joined the Maine women’s staff.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Jessica Davos was named women’s coach at Bryant. She replaces Karen Rife … Syracuse announced that lacrosse Hall of Fame member Gary Gait will coach its women’s team. Gait won three titles as a player with the Orange and seven as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Maryland. He has spent the last two seasons as head coach of the Colorado Mammoth, a National Lacrosse League team.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants — Holy Cross selected Colin Hulme as assistant men’s coach … Allison Brennan was named assistant coach of the women’s team at Longwood.
Rowing assistants — Lucas McGee was selected at Washington. He previously coached at Brown … Leslie Smith was added to the William Smith staff.
Men’s and women’s soccer — Ed Huneke announced his retirement as head men’s soccer coach at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, effective at season’s end. Kevin Kalish, recently named associate head coach of the program, will take over upon Huneke’s departure … Kate McCarthy was named an assistant women’s coach at Bridgewater State … Kim Campbell was tabbed interim women’s coach at Molloy.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Stefano Franciosa has been named assistant men’s coach at Bentley … Phil Howe will join the men’s staff at Bridgewater State, his alma mater … Colin Kuchy and Eric Bentzinger joined the Central (Iowa) staff … Kevin Coleman was named graduate assistant at La Salle, his alma mater … Thomas Murdoch will work as an assistant men’s coach at Baruch … Loyola (Illinois) tabbed Carly Draper as a graduate assistant with the women’s program … New York University added Guillermo Valencia and Michael Guerrero to its women’s staff … Rhode Island College tabbed Dean Brookes as assistant men’s coach … Kentucky hired Matt Kellogg for its women’s staff … New Jersey City selected Andrea Sellitti as a women’s coach … Thomas Notte and Simon Nee were added to the Felician men’s staff … St. Joseph’s (Long Island) named James R. She spent the past year on the Western Kentucky staff … Trinity (Texas) tabbed Jamie Southern as an assistant … Former Iowa player Sami Baugh was hired as an assistant as Central Michigan … Lincoln Memorial tabbed Tiffany Edgar.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Michael Holman was tabbed at Oswego State … California named David Durden coach for its men’s program.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistants — Skip Nitardy was named head coach of the Maine program … New York U. added Jack Leavitt to its women’s staff … Emily Lapinski joined the women’s staff at Guilford.
Men’s and women’s tennis — Dan McCain was hired as head women’s coach at Cal State Bakersfield. He succeeds Tony Congdon … Bradley selected Jacek Wolicki to lead its men’s program. He replaces Mark Dolan … Jay Udwadia joined the Fresno State men’s program as its associate head coach … Fayek Megeed will lead the men’s and women’s programs at Oswego State … Rob Stephens was named head men’s coach at Guilford. Stephens replaces Bert Poole … Erick Garcia was chosen to lead the Niagara men’s program … Melissa King was selected as head women’s coach at Arcadia … Matt Boven resigned as women’s coach at Kalamazoo.
Men’s and women’s tennis assistants — Radoslav Radev will assist both programs at New York U … St. Joseph’s (Long Island) selected Greg Conta for its women’s team.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Andrew Walker was named head men’s coach and Mary Boller-Easterbrook was named head women’s coach at Hilbert … Luis Carvalho was named head women’s coach at Rhode Island College. He takes over for Craig Letourneau.
Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — Marriah Vengroff, a 2006 Wheaton (Massachusetts) graduate, was hired by her alma mater … Mark Jones was named assistant coach of the women’s program at Maine … Becca Segal will join the New York University women’s program … Baruch tabbed Greg Waldvogel as a women’s assistant … Lloyd Sheehan was promoted to full-time status at Keene State while Kristine Howell joined the program as a first-year assistant … Bentley hired Karrin Moore … Holy Cross added Jessica Cegarra to its women’s staff … Guilford chose Frank Montondo as an assistant.
Men’s and women’s water polo — Jack Kocur, who served as interim men’s coach at Pepperdine last season, has been awarded the job on a full-time basis … Cal State Bakersfield named Jason Gall as its women’s coach. He replaces Sasha Poljak … Adam Foley was selected as head coach at MIT. He replaces Felix Mercado.
Wrestling assistant — Central (Iowa) added Jason Zastrow.

Athletic trainers — Jason Ensrud was promoted at Nebraska Wesleyan … Oneonta State hired Frank Vaughan as head athletic trainer … Katie Zukin was hired at Lake Superior State.
Assistant athletic trainers — Dallas Fichtner has been hired at Nebraska Wesleyan … Brinn Spencer joined the Oneonta State athletics department … Bridgewater State tabbed Steven Glazier … Longwood tabbed Jenna Page.
Development — Rhode Island College named Andrew Schoepfer development and marketing intern … Montana State-Billings hired Brent Montague as an athletics corporate salesperson. He was assistant basketball coach for the school from 1996 to 2003, also serving as compliance officer from 2000 to 2003.
Equipment assistant — Former Bridgewater football standout and current assistant coach Doug Borsari has joined the full-time staff as an assistant equipment manager.
Event management — Trinity (Texas) promoted Seth Asbury to coordinator of athletics events.
Marketing — Charlotte hired Nick Konawalik as director of marketing. Konawalik spent the last two years as director of athletics marketing at Princeton.
Sports information — Norwich hired Christian Anderson … Michelle Bradley was named assistant director of athletics media relations at Holy Cross … UC Riverside chose Scott Zavitz as assistant media relations director … Pepperdine hired Roger Horne as sports information director.
Sports information assistants — Karen Costello and Ronnie Zamora joined Pepperdine’s staff as assistant sports information directors.
Strength and conditioning assistants — Winthrop hired Hayes Galitski … Maine added Terry O’Neill and Jesse Webber to its staff.
Ticket operations — Winthrop selected Lauren Birnie as athletics ticket manager.
Corrections
In the August 27 issue of The NCAA News, it was incorrectly printed that T.J. Kohler was hired as the head baseball coach at Becker. Kohler was hired as the head baseball coach at Lawrence after a recent stint as an assistant at Kenyon. He will also work as an assistant with the Lawrence football program.

The Big South hired Janette Schneider as public relations assistant … Mollie Lehman was tabbed as director of business and operations at the Western Athletic Conference … Gail Barksdale was chosen as director of sports services at the Northeast Conference … The Patriot League hired Darlene Gordon as director of championships and business operations and Patrick Muffley as assistant director for sports management and compliance … Keri Boyce was hired as director of compliance at the Big 12. Previously the compliance eligibility coordinator at Texas Tech, Boyce also served as an intern at the NCAA national office. She earned her undergraduate degree from Kentucky, where she was a four-year member of the women’s soccer team … Josh Reilly has been named publicist for the State University of New York Athletic Conference … The Commonwealth Coast Conference tabbed Matt Pettinicchi as sports information coordinator … The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference added Chestnut Hill as a member … The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference named Bob Schrumpf assistant commissioner of marketing and sales, Alisa Kresge director of women’s basketball operations, Dawn Anderson director of championships and special event, Amy Feeney director of marketing, Ed Kaminski administrative fellow for championships, Aimee Aluzzo administrative fellow for compliance, Frank Lombardy administrative fellow for marketing and Shaun Fean administrative fellow for marketing.
Deaths
Bill Ireland, the first director of athletics and football coach at UNLV died at the age of 80 … Former Missouri athletics director Mel Sheehan died … Former New Mexico football player Brandon Ratcliff died last week … John Montgomery Belk, the mayor of Charlotte from 1969-77, died August 17 at the age of 87. Belk captained the basketball team at Davidson during his undergraduate days and went on to serve in World War II and the Korean War. He was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 … Former New Hampshire administrator and football coach Gerry Friel died August 21 … John Robert Downey, who excelled as a member of the New Jersey City soccer program from 1959-61, died August 23. He was 76 … Leonard Coffman, the last living starter from Tennessee’s undefeated national champion football team in 1938, died August 30 at the age of 92. The Army veteran also spent time as an assistant coach at Wyoming … Former Texas swimming and diving coach Julian Robertson died August 28 at the age of 98. As a student-athlete at Michigan, Robertson led the Wolverines to national championships in 1934 and 1935. He served as coach at Texas from 1936-43 and 1946-50 and led the Longhorns to 13 conference championships during his career.
