Presidents and chancellors
Richard Pattenaude was named chancellor of the Maine system. He had been president of Southern Maine … Maryville (Missouri) selected Mark Lombardi as president … Rev. Julio Giulietti was chosen as president of Wheeling Jesuit … Robin Baker was named president at George Fox. She previously served as provost … Lasell tabbed Michael Alexander as president … Dale Lunsford will assume the presidency at LeTourneau, effective July 1 … Siena selected Rev. Kevin Mullen as president … David Williams, previously the vice provost for research at Lehigh, was named president at Alabama-Huntsville … Texas Lutheran named Ann Svennungsen as its new president.
Directors of athletics
Kevin McHugh was named director of athletics at Bates after serving in a similar capacity at The College of New Jersey for the past 20 years. An active participant in the NCAA governance structure, McHugh served as vice chair of the Division III Management Council. He succeeds Suzanne Coffey, who is now director of athletics at Amherst … Eric Van Kley announced his resignation as athletics director and wrestling coach at Great Falls. Van Kley will become the head wrestling coach at Central (Iowa).
Associate directors of athletics
Ohio hired Roderick Perry as associate athletics director for compliance and student services … Florida State promoted Rob Wilson to associate athletics director for communications. Wilson had been the sports information director at his alma mater since 1994. Tina Thomas was promoted to the position of sports information director.
Assistant directors of athletics
Doug Knoth was promoted to assistant athletics director for development at Utah. Knuth joined the athletics department in September 2005 … Bradley hired John Searby as assistant athletics director for external affairs. Searby comes to Bradley from Auburn, where he served as director of basketball operations.
Coaches
Baseball — Warren Turner has announced his retirement from Missouri Southern State, effective at the end of the school year. In 31 seasons as head coach of the Lions, Turner has compiled an overall record of 849-711-3.
Men’s basketball — Winthrop tabbed Randy Peele to lead the program. Peele has served as an assistant with the team for the past four years and replaces Gregg Marshall, who left for Wichita State … Norfolk State appointed Anthony Evans as interim coach for the 2007-08 season. Evans had been as an assistant with the program for the past four seasons … Scott Sutton signed a contract extension that will keep him at Oral Roberts through 2014 … Saint Louis released Brad Soderberg. Angres Thorpe was tabbed as interim head coach … The only three-time captain in Princeton men’s basketball history, Sydney Johnson was named head coach at his alma mater on Friday. Johnson has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Georgetown, where he helped lead the Hoyas to this year’s Final Four. He replaces Joe Scott, who resigned to accept a similar post at Denver.
Men’s basketball assistants — Kentucky added Jeremy Cox and Glynn Cyprien to its staff. Cox worked as an assistant at Texas A&M last season while Cyprien most recently coached at Arkansas … Delaware assistant Ryan Iversen has resigned his post with the program … Oregon State added Jerome Francis Jr. to its staff … Fresno State named Jeff Reinert associate head coach and Lee Moon assistant coach … Rob Evans has been added to the Arkansas coaching staff. Evans previously served as head coach at Mississippi and Arizona State. He was named Southeastern Conference coach of the year in 1997 … San Diego selected Bill Carr as associate basketball coach. Walter Roese and Kyle Bankhead were named assistants.
Women’s basketball — Central Michigan selected Sue Guevara to lead its program. Guevara spent the past three years as an assistant at Auburn, helping the Tigers to a 51-41 mark … Pam DeCosta was named head coach at San Jose State. She most recently coached at Lynn … Florida tabbed Amanda Butler, who is a former four-year starter for the Gators. Butler spent two years as head coach at Charlotte … Duke hired Joanne McCallie as its head women’s basketball coach. McCallie spent the past seven seasons leading the Michigan State program, compiling an overall record of 149-75. She led the Spartans to a school-record 33 wins and an appearance in the NCAA national championship game in 2005. McCallie replaces Gail Goestenkors, who accepted the head post at Texas … Fairfield named Joe Frager head coach … Jody Adams was selected as the head coach at Murray State … Washington hired Tia Jackson as its head coach. Jackson replaces June Daugherty, who was recently named head coach at Washington State … Kentucky named Matthew Mitchell as its head women’s basketball coach. Formerly the head coach at Morehead State, Mitchell also spent time as an assistant at Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky. He succeeds Mickie DeMoss … Penn State selected Coquese Washington as its head women’s basketball coach. Washington has spent the past eight seasons as an assistant at Notre Dame, her alma mater. She replaces Rene Portland, who resigned after 27 years at the helm of the program … Rutgers signed head women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer to a seven-year contract extension. Stringer has spent the past 12 seasons on the Rutgers sidelines, compiling a 257-125 record and leading the Scarlet Knights to the 2007 championship game. During her career as a Division I coach, Stringer has amassed 777 victories.
Women’s basketball assistants — Angela Lewis-Moore was added to the staff at Southeast Missouri State … Washington added Fred Applin and Loree Payne as assistants.
Men’s and women’s cross country — Simpson promoted Brad Hofer to head men’s and women’s coach. Hofer had served as interim coach since December.
Football assistants — Delaware named T.J. DiMuzio as running backs coach and Bob Acosta as tight ends coach. Current assistant coach Dyran Peake will now have specific responsibilities as cornerbacks coach.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Boston College women’s coach Tom Mutch resigned his post. Mutch led the Eagles to their first appearance in the Women’s Frozen Four this past season.
Men’s and women’s soccer — Mike Kulas resigned his post as head men’s coach at Assumption … Concordia (Illinois) tabbed Adam Nirenberg as its head men’s and women’s coach … After 18 years at the helm of the Barton men’s program, Gary Hall has announced his retirement from the coaching profession. Hall will continue his role as the school’s director of athletics.
Softball — The Milwaukee School of Engineering hired Rod Wilterdink as head coach. Wilterdink replaces Dan Bantin, who retired after nine years at the helm.
Men’s and women’s tennis — Whitman women’s coach Heidi Tate has resigned her position to pursue a medical career. A two-time Northwest Conference coach of the year, Tate compiled a 67-32 mark during her seven years with the program.
Men’s and women’s tennis assistant — Bob Pollack has been named an assistant with the Delaware women’s program. Pollack’s daughter Susan is the team’s top player.
Men’s and women’s volleyball — After two years as head coach of the Massachusetts-Dartmouth volleyball program, Jocelyn Costa has resigned. Costa compiled a 29-30 record during her tenure, leading the Corsairs to Little East tournament berths in each season.
Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — Winthrop added Shannon Wells to its volleyball staff. Wells spent the past two years as a graduate assistant at Morehead State … Dan Fisher and Samantha Hartwell were named assistants at San Francisco.
Staff
Academic services — Washington hired Ashley Anderson as its coordinator of life skills and tabbed Kristen Guymon as an academic advisor.
Development — Michelle Young was named assistant director for athletics development at Temple … Aretha Thurmond was named director of the Big “W” Club at Washington. She replaces Greg Lewis.
Marketing — Utah named Ann Ronchetti as director of marketing. Ronchetti joins the staff after spending four years in the Syracuse athletics department.
Conferences
Rudy Keeling was selected as commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, effective May 1. Most recently the director of athletics at Emerson, Keeling has more than 25 years of experience in athletics administration. A former basketball coach, Keeling roamed the sidelines as an assistant at Bradley and Marquette before leading the Maine and Northeastern programs as head coach. During his tenure at Emerson, Keeling represented the Great Northeastern Athletic Conference on the Division III Management Council … The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the resignation of Julie Byron, assistant commissioner for women’s basketball operations.
Corrections
In the April 23 edition of the NCAA News, it was incorrectly stated that Duffy Bass had compiled a 713-457-18 career record as head baseball coach at Iowa State. Bass actually spent his career at Illinois State, where he served as head coach from 1964-88 and led the program to the 1969 national title.

Tennessee assistant track and field coaches Caryl Smith Gilbert and John Frazier have been selected to serve on the coaching staff for the 2007 IAAF World Championships … Stanford director of athletics Bob Bowlsby has been appointed to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Former Tennessee strength and conditioning coach John Stucky died April 12. He was 59 … Former Michigan State football standout George Webster died April 19 at the age of 61. After college, Webster went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL … Former Tennessee linebacker Lyonel Stewart died.
