Richardson announced his retirement from Auburn, effective this summer … Gene C. Crume Jr. was hired at Indiana State … Henderson State President Charles Dunn will retire June 30, 2008 … William Destler will become president of Rochester on July 1 … James P. Women’s basketball — Rider’s Tori Harrison resigned, effective April 1 … Felician named interim women’s basketball coach Ben DiNallo Jr. to the position permanently. DiNallo coached the Golden Falcons from 1998 to 2005 when he resigned to focus on administrative duties. He was named director of athletics in February 2003 after nearly five years as an assistant director. He coached the last 10 games of the 2006-07 on an interim basis. He will continue as athletics director … Lamar hired Larry Tidwell … McNeese State named Brooks Donald Williams as head coach … Tracy Roller signed a four-year contact extension with Ball State … Temple extended Dawn Staley’s contract by six years … Central Florida selected Joi Williams-Felton … Katie Abrahamson-Henderson resigned from Missouri State … Gail Goestenkors moved to Texas. She was the Associated Press’ coach of the year after a 32-2 season at Duke … Arizona State extended Charli Turner Thorne’s contract through the 2011-12 season … Tara Owens will be the new women’s basketball coach at Norfolk State. She coached at Elizabeth City State for the last three seasons, compiling a 58-31 record and appearing twice in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament finals. She also coached at Cheyney, where she was involved in the National Youth Sports Program. She was a student-athlete at Virginia State … Cincinnati hired J. Kelley Hall … Pittsburg State selected Lane Lord to coach the women’s basketball team. Lord most recently coached at Barton County Community College, leading the Cougars to a 27-3 overall record last season. He replaces Steve High, who retired at the end of the 2006-07 season … Hartford extended Jennifer Rizzotti’s contract through the 2014 season … Sherri Murrell resigned her position at Washington State … Baylor signed Kim Mulkey to a contract extension that will keep her at the institution for the next 10 years … Washington hired Tia Jackson … Michigan selected Kevin Borseth, former Wisconsin-Green Bay coach … Mickie DeMoss resigned as head coach of the Kentucky women’s basketball team. DeMoss had compiled a 71-56 record in four seasons at Kentucky, including a 20-14 record in the most recent season. Before her time at Tennessee, DeMoss was a head coach at Florida … Mercer selected Janell Jones … Pam DeCosta will coach at San Jose State … Wingate named Barbara Nelson head coach … California coach Joanne Boyle agreed to a new seven-year contract … LSU chose former Olympic and WNBA coach Van Chancellor … Ann McInerney resigned at Maine.
Women’s basketball assistant — Todd Schaefer resigned as head coach at Arkansas Tech to take an assistant’s position with Cincinnati.
Men’s and women’s cross country — April Likhite will return to Northwestern to coach women’s cross country. Likhite coached the squad from 1998-2001. She replaces Amy Tush.
Men’s and women’s cross country assistant — Hanover hired Jason Baribeau.
Field hockey — Ann Gold retired from Lafayette.
Football — Bill Kavanaugh resigned at Massachusetts-Dartmouth after 17 years to coach at Bishop Stang High School … Austin Peay hired Rick Christophel … Oklahoma State extended Mike Gundy’s contract through the 2012 season.
Football assistants — Illinois State hired Denver Johnson to coach wide receivers … Bryant announced the resignation of Mark Klaiman. He will assist at Merrimack … Texas A&M-Commerce tabbed David Gibbs to be defensive coordinator and Cedric Dickerson as secondary coach … Temple selected Tyree Foreman to coach running backs … Scott Kavanagh will coach quarterbacks at Western Michigan … Brian Crist will coach wide receivers and Jason Brooks will assist with defensive backs at Massachusetts … Wyoming named Casey Glenn director of football operations … Greg McMackin will be defensive coordinator at Hawaii … Gary Emanuel will coach the defensive line at San Jose State … Murray State hired Aaron Hutsell to coach the defensive secondary, Kenyatta McCoy to coach cornerbacks and Carl Mintken to coach running backs … Georgia State named Dan Reeves a consultant … Maine selected Joe Rossi to coach defensive backs and Frank Giufre to coach the offensive line.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Longtime Southern New Hampshire assistant Ken Hutchins will take over the head men’s ice hockey coaching position at the school. He will replace Rene LeClerc.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Mount Holyoke hired Miriam Esber.
Rowing — Rhode Island announced Shelagh Donohoe as the institution’s head rowing coach. Donohoe served as interim coach during the 2006 season after spending nine years as the coach of the novice women’s program at Northeastern. Donohoe was a member of the U.S. National Rowing team and has competed in three world championships, the Goodwill Games and the Olympics. She served as an assistant coach at Boston U. and Harvard. She was a student-athlete at UMass-Lowell, graduating with a degree in business administration.
Men’s and women’s soccer — Former Smith assistant Kanae Haneishi, will coach soccer at Mount Holyoke. Haneishi has been a member of the United Soccer League’s New York Magic since 2003 and played on the Japanese national team that earned a silver medal in the World University Games … Houston promoted former assistant Susan Bush to lead the women’s team … Linfield hired Ian Lefebvre for its men’s program … San Diego State hired Mike Friesen to coach the women’s program … Knox hired Nikki McLellan to coach the women’s team … Air Force men’s coach Lou Sagastume announced his retirement after 28 seasons as head coach at the institution.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — DePaul hired Erica Westrich for the women’s program … Ernie Yarborough will join the men’s team at UAB.
Softball — Knox selected Jami Strinz … Lincoln (Pennsylvania) selected Chris Cummings.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Lenoir-Rhyne chose Paul Schiffel to lead its new women’s swimming program. Schiffel owns and coaches the Catawba Valley Aquatics Club. He was the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming teams at St. Stephens High School since 1992. Schiffel holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina, where he was a member of the men’s swim team and later served as an assistant coach … Georgetown tabbed Steven Cartwright.
Men’s and women’s tennis — Bryant named Ron Gendron interim men’s coach … Lenoir-Rhyne tabbed Bobby McKee to be tennis director. He will coach both men’s and women’s teams. McKee was twice named coach of the year and is a nine-time South Atlantic Conference coach of the year. He has coached at Presbyterian since 1981.
Men’s and women’s volleyball — Kim Schrader will lead the women’s program at Knox.
Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — LSU hired Steve Loeswick … Long Island hired Sarah Chlebana as women’s assistant coach and Katrina English to direct volleyball operations … Megan Smalley was hired at Hanover. She will also be an assistant softball coach.
Men’s and women’s water polo — Whittier selected Allison Hedgpeth to coach the women’s team.
Wrestling — Missouri signed Brian Smith to a five-year contract extension.

Development — Sean Rochelle was named director of development for women’s athletics at Arkansas.

Homer Harris, the first African-American captain of a Big Ten football team (at Iowa), died last month. He was 90 … Former Appalachian State Athletics Director Jim Garner died April 2. Garner, who also held positions at West Texas State, TCU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, was 63 … Rice basketball player Jonathan Bailey died April 5. He had turned 22 on April 4 … Former Purdue student-athlete and NFL veteran Darryl Stingley died April 5 ... Tiffin football student-athlete B.J. Passarge died April 10, a week after suffering injuries in a car accident. He was 21 (see story, page 3).
