Chancellors and presidents
William Rund was named president at Shippensburg. He previously served as vice president for development and university relations at Cal State Stanislaus … Maurice Scherrens was chosen as president of Coastal Carolina. He had been senior vice president at George Mason … Barbara Snyder assumed the presidency at Case Reserve.
Associate director of athletics
Tim Grosz was promoted to associate director of athletics at Northwestern (Minnesota).
Assistant director of athletics
Northwestern (Minnesota) promoted Corey Borchardt to assistant athletics director for sports information.
Coaches
Baseball – After 11 seasons at the helm, Campbell head coach Chip Smith has resigned. Smith leaves as the program’s all-time leader with 267 victories. Chris Wiley was named interim coach for the 2007 season.
Men’s and women’s cross country – Oswego State has hired Christian Weigandt to lead the program. He replaces Tim Boyce, who led the program for the past six years.
Football – Marshall Sperbeck will take over the Sacramento State program … Minnesota selected Tim Brewster as its new head coach. Brewster spent the last two seasons as the tight ends coach with the Denver Broncos. He succeeds Glen Mason … Rice named David Bailiff as its new head coach. Bailiff was previously the head coach at Texas State, where he led the Bobcats to a 21-15 record during the past three seasons. He succeeds Todd Graham … Texas State named Brad Wright interim coach … Rod Broadway will replace Melvin Spears at Grambling State. He had been coach at North Carolina Central.
Football assistants – Jack Bicknell Jr. has been tabbed as offensive line coach at Texas Tech. Bicknell was previously head coach at Louisiana Tech for eight seasons. He replaces Bill Bedenbaugh … Todd Schonhar will lead the quarterbacks at Stephen F. Austin … Gus Malzahn and Herb Hand were added to the Tulsa staff. The coaches will lead the Golden Hurricane offense as co-offensive coordinators … Kansas appointed Ed Warinner to the staff. He will serve as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach … Kentucky promoted Steve Brown to defensive coordinator … Central Michigan added Zach Azzanni, Tim Banks, Max Glowacki and Don Mahoney … Alabama hired Bo Davis, Steve Marshall and Ron Middleton … New Mexico tabbed Dave Baldwin as offensive coordinator. He replaces Bob Toledo … Delaware added Damian Wroblewski to its staff. Wroblewski will lead the Blue Hen offensive line. He replaces Jim Turner, who resigned earlier this month for a similar post at Boston College … David Lee was tabbed as offensive coordinator at Arkansas. He had been an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys for the past four seasons … UCLA released offensive coordinator Jim Svoboda … Florida State named Chuck Amato as executive associate head coach and linebackers coach. He replaces Kevin Steele who moved to Alabama … Alabama also hired Major Applewhite and Burton Burns … Baylor named Clay Jennings cornerbacks coach … Gary Crowton will take over offensive coordinating duties at LSU … Ron West returned to Clemson after accepting a job at West Virginia.
Field hockey – Babson hired Julie Smith as head coach and equipment manager. Smith comes from Boston College, where she had served as an assistant coach and athletics department intern.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant – Nicole Moore joined Temple’s women’s staff.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Bill Lawler was named head men’s coach at Daniel Webster. Lawler spent last season as an assistant at Dartmouth … Ali Khosroshahin has been tabbed as head women’s coach at Southern California. Khosroshahin spent the past six years leading the Cal State Fullerton program … Buena Vista announced Hunter Balmer will be the school’s new head women’s soccer coach. Balmer has been the top assistant for both the men’s and women’s team for the past two seasons. Balmer replaces Matt Klosterman, who will continue in his role as head men’s soccer coach. Balmer graduated from Roanoke, where he played goalkeeper on the men’s team.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Tusculum added Todd Eason to its men’s staff. Eason served the past two seasons as an assistant at North Georgia College and State University … Alabama appointed Nikki Smith to an assistant’s position for the women’s team.
Softball – Liz Wagner was appointed head coach at Oneonta State. Wagner most recently served as an assistant at Harvard. She takes over the program from Deanna Parks, who stepped down in August to take the head post at Siena.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Brad Pihl was tabbed as head men’s coach at Wheaton (Illinois). He replaces Daniel Webster.
Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Former Texas-Pan American standout Hugo Cervantes has returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach. Cervantes recently served as an assistant at Austin Peay.
Men’s and women’s volleyball – Eric Snyder was selected as head volleyball coach at Stonehill. Snyder worked as an assistant at South Alabama this fall and previously spent two years as a graduate assistant at Tiffin. He replaces Brad Alexander, who retired after five seasons.
Staff
Academic services – Meghan Shepherd has been named academics coordinator at Northern Arizona. Shepherd most recently held a similar position at Westfield State.
Assistant athletic trainer – Saint Rose selected Jessup Pierce as assistant athletic trainer.
Business manager – Kelly Lee was chosen as business manager at the College of Charleston. Lee previously worked at Georgia Tech.
Compliance – Michigan State selected Jill Gainey as assistant compliance coordinator. Gainey previously worked in a similar position at Marshall … Sarah Pruess was named coordinator of NCAA compliance and eligibility at Wayne State. Pruess has served as director of compliance at Chicago State and George Mason.
Development – Boston U. hired Bill Ring as director of development for athletics. Ring has served as the associate director of development at Boston College since March 2004. Prior to his time at Boston College, Ring worked for six years at Georgetown, his alma mater … Mark Rudolph was chosen as director of development for athletics at Minnesota-Duluth. Rudolph recently worked as a fund-raiser at North Dakota. He succeeds Skeeter Moore, who accepted another post in the athletics department in September.
Sports information – St. Mary’s (Maryland) hired Nairem Moran as its sports information director. She replaces Shawne McCoy, who was promoted to assistant director of athletics.
Sports information assistant – Southern Utah hired Kyle Cottam.
Notables
Ohio Wesleyan men’s soccer coach Jay Martin has been named the recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Honor Award. During his 30-year tenure with the program, Martin has led the Battling Bishops to seven NCAA semifinal appearances, a pair of runner-up finishes and the 1998 national championship. He boasts a career record of 515-99-41 and served as the school’s director of athletics for 19 years.

The Northeast Conference named Heather Soellner as its administrative intern.

Len Stachitas was chosen as executive director of Play It Smart and vice president of the National Football Foundation.
Deaths
Former Texas Tech Sports Information Director Walt McAlexander died January 10 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 62 … Ralph Crocker, Auburn’s associate director of intercollegiate swimming and diving, died on January 14. A former Auburn swimmer, Crocker had spent the past seven seasons with the program. Crocker helped lead the Tigers to eight NCAA and 10 SEC championships while compiling a dual-meet record of 102-3 … Former UCLA soccer standout David Vanole died after collapsing at dinner on January 15. A member of the Bruins’ 1985 national championship team, Vanole also served the goalkeeper for the United States during the 1988 Olympics and 1990 World Cup … South Florida running back Keeley Dorsey collapsed and died after a conditioning workout January 17. He was 19.
