Chancellors and presidents
Grant Cornwell was hired as president of Wooster. He had been dean of academic affairs and vice president of St. Lawrence … Washington State chose Elson S. Floyd to be president. Floyd comes from the presidency of the University of Missouri system … Michael Benson was selected as president of Southern Utah. Previously, Benson served as president of Snow College.
Directors of athletics
Grinnell Director of Athletics Dee Fairchild has announced her retirement, effective July 31. Fairchild has been in her current position for the past 21 years and has served on numerous NCAA committees during her tenure. She will enter senior faculty status during the 2007-08 academic year and plans to write her memoirs during that time … Louisville extended the contract of Tom Jurich by two years. He will remain with the school through 2016 … Oneonta State tabbed Tracey Ranieri, who previously led the women’s soccer program.
Associate director of athletics
Pittsburgh named E.J. Borghetti associate athletics director for media relations.
Coaches
Baseball assistants – Tusculum assistant coach Mike Corn will assume additional duties as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Corn replaces Sean Gibbs, who accepted a post with the Kansas City Royals … B.J. Griffith resigned at North Dakota State. Blair Tweet will fill the position on an interim basis for the 2007 season.
Men’s basketball – Hawaii coach Riley Wallace will retire at the end of the season … Illinois-Chicago coach Jimmy Collins began a personal absence December 23. Associate head coach Mark Coomes took over for Collins. Collins is in his 11th season with the Flames and is the school’s all-time wins leader. The Flames last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2004. No timetable was set for Collins’ return … Akron re-signed Keith Dambrot to a five-year contract … Tennessee Tech extended Mike Sutton’s contract through the 2010-11 season.
Women’s basketball – McNeese State announced the resignation of Carol Sensley due to medical reasons.
Football – Alabama signed Nick Saban to an eight-year contract. Saban previously served as head coach at LSU and spent the last two seasons leading the Miami Dolphins … Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Before the season, Petrino signed a 10-year contract with Louisville and led the Cardinals to an Orange Bowl victory January 2. Petrino compiled a 41-9 record in four seasons. Louisville hired Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe to replace Petrino. Kragthorpe signed a five-year contract with Louisville after compiling a 29-22 record in four seasons at Tulsa … Wisconsin-Whitewater selected Lance Leipold as its new head football coach. A former standout quarterback and assistant coach at the school, Leipold most recently served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Nebraska-Omaha. He replaces Bob Berezowitz, who retired after a 22-year career … San Diego hired Ron Caragher as head coach … Rice signed Todd Graham to a contract extension that runs through 2012 … Minnesota dismissed Glen Mason … Kentucky extended the contract of coach Rich Brooks … Air Force hired Troy Calhoun … Stephen F. Austin tabbed J.C. Harper … Jacksonville signed Kerwin Bell to a four-year contract … Tommy Spangler left Presbyterian.
Football assistants – Wagner announced the resignation of assistant coaches Brian Sheridan and Chris Ostrowsky … Central Florida promoted David Kelly to wide receivers coach. Kelly previously worked as the program’s director of high school relations … Texas tabbed Larry Mac Duff as its new defensive co-coordinator and assistant head coach. He replaces Gene Chizik, who left to become head coach at Iowa State … Alabama-Birmingham added Lorenzo Costantini and Steve Martin to the staff … Samford named Bill D’Ottavio as defensive coordinator. He recently worked as assistant head coach at Tulane … Air Force added Tim Horton, Tim DeRuyter, Brian Knorr and Ben Miller to the staff … Thomas Cox joined Tennessee Tech as an assistant … Georgia hired Stacy Searels as offensive line coach … North Carolina State added Keith Willis as defensive line coach and Jerry Petercuskie as recruiting coordinator and special teams coach … Alabama hired Kirby Smart, Kevin Steele and Lance Thompson as assistants with the Crimson Tide … Arizona State hired Matt Lubick to coach safeties and coordinate recruiting … Cincinnati added Jeff Quinn, Keith Gilmore, Ernest Jones and Charley Molnar … Kansas’ offensive coordinator Nick Quartaro resigned … Florida State’s Billy Sexton resigned.
Men’s and women’s golf – William Smith coach Jeff Pulli announced his resignation after four seasons at the helm. Michelle Walsh was named interim coach for the spring season.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Former Oneonta State all-American soccer player Liz McGrail has been named interim head coach at the school. McGrail replaces Tracey Ranieri, who was named director of athletics at the school. During McGrail’s four seasons in uniform, Oneonta State compiled a 65-15-6 record. She also served as an assistant coach with the program from 2001-03.
Softball assistant – Slippery Rock tabbed Becky Mezyk as assistant coach. A three-time all-region performer at California (Pennsylvania), Mezyk concluded her playing career last spring.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Randolph named Paul Sunwall as head men’s coach. The program will begin competition next year.
Men’s and women’s tennis assistant – Nick Dargene joined the Wyoming staff as an assistant with the women’s program.
Men’s and women’s volleyball – San Jose State will not renew the contract of women’s coach Craig Choate.
Staff
Sports information – Steven Crider was named sports information director at Penn State-Altoona. Only 21, Crider is one of the youngest full-time sports information directors in the country. Crider is a graduate of California (Pennsylvania) and served a two-semester internship with his new employer … Ball State named Chris Taylor director of athletics communications and marketing.
Notables
Host Communications named Angela Haar as the general manager of the company’s sports marketing property at Kentucky. Haar spent the past seven years in a managerial capacity at ESPN’s property at Kansas.
Conferences
Stephanie Prewitt was selected as West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference assistant commissioner for internal affairs. She will also serve as the conference’s senior woman administrator … The Western Athletic Conference hired Elizabeth Kampfe to be director of championships.
Associations
The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame promoted Hillary Jeffries to director of special projects. A 2001 magna cum laude graduate of West Virginia, Jeffries earned a master’s degree in sport management from her alma mater in 2005 before joining the NFF.
Deaths
Former Seton Hall track and field coach Johnny Gibson died December 29 at the age of 101. Gibson, who once held the world record in the 400-meter hurdles, coached at Seton Hall from 1946-72 … Former Oklahoma State football star Darrent Williams was killed January 1. Williams spent the past two years playing cornerback for the NFL’s Denver Broncos. He was 24 … Long-time East Stroudsburg sports information director Peter Nevins died January 6. Nevins is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame … Southern California kicker Mario Danelo died in a climbing accident … Former Drake Relays Director Bob Ehrhart died January 7 at the age of 75. Ehrhart retired after 31 years as director in 2000 … Milton “Dubby” Holt died January 7 from natural causes. Holt spent 34 years as a student-athlete, coach and administrator at Idaho State. He retired as the school’s director of athletics in 1979 … Former Georgia Tech football standout Ray Beck died January 9 after an extended illness. Beck, who went on to play for the New York Giants, was 75.
