Suzy Merchant, who spent the past nine years at the helm of the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball program, was named head coach at Michigan State.

During her tenure at Eastern Michigan, Merchant led the Eagles to a record of 147-90, including three 20-win seasons, three postseason appearances and two Mid-American Conference West Division titles.

Merchant also spent three years as head coach at Saginaw Valley State, where she compiled a 54-29 mark and led the program to just its second berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.

A four-year starter and three-year captain during her playing days at Central Michigan, Merchant holds team records for career assists (463) and single-season assists (158). Her 75 career three-point field goals are third on the school’s all-time list.

Merchant replaces Joanne McCallie, who accepted the head coaching position at Duke.
