Echols to retire from South Atlantic
The NCAA News
Doug Echols announced his retirement as commissioner of the South Atlantic Conference, effective June 30.
Echols began his tenure with the league in 1989 and is its first and only commissioner. Formed as a football-only conference in 1975, the league became a Division II member in 1992. It now offers 14 championships for more than 3,000 student-athletes.
With more than 40 years working in education and athletics administration, Echols served on a number of NCAA committees during his tenure with the conference. He is presently on the NCAA task force charged with reviewing membership structure.
