Bill Walsh loses battle with leukemia

Intercollegiate and NFL coaching legend Bill Walsh died July 30 after a battle with leukemia. He was 75.
A former football student-athlete at San Jose State University, Walsh began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of California, Berkeley, and later at Stanford University. After stints as an assistant with Oakland, Cincinnati and San Diego in the National Football League, Walsh got his first shot as a head coach at Stanford in 1977.
Walsh led the Cardinal to 17 wins in two seasons before moving across town to San Francisco, where he began a 10-year tenure as head coach of the 49ers. During his decade with the franchise, Walsh led San Francisco to Super Bowl championships in 1981, 1984 and 1988.
In 1992, Walsh returned to the sidelines in Palo Alto, serving as head coach at Stanford for three more seasons. In 2005, he served as interim director of athletics at the university.
Walsh was selected to the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
