Bowl games
Cedric Dempsey, Former NCAA president
San Diego Union-Tribune
"I think there are too many bowls. We’ve moved away from the two main objectives of the bowl system. One is to reward excellence. It’s hard to say a 6-6 record is excellence. Secondarily, it was supposed to be a celebration of the game by the community. Many are now just television-driven."
David Carter, executive director, Sports Business Institute
University of Southern California
San Diego Union-Tribune
"It’s content for these cable networks to fill their programming wants and needs. To the extent that they can fill advertising and deliver a quality product, and continue to deliver the ratings points that sponsors and advertisers are looking for, you’ll continue to see these kinds of bowl games offered."
Peter Derzis, senior vice president
ESPN Regional Television
San Diego Union-Tribune
"We are not aware of any additional opportunities right now, but I might have told you that last year at this time before we got involved (as owner of two new bowl games, the Birmingham Bowl and New Mexico Bowl).
"I think the market will end up determining (the maximum number of games), and the market will provide any corrections."
Student-athlete gambling
Steve Peterson, head baseball coach
Middle Tennessee State University
Nashville Tennessean
"It is a serious problem. The first time you go to a poker game or bet on a sports team you don’t expect to become hooked, but winning is a tremendous rush, whether it’s baseball or playing cards. Gambling is so accepted, it can happen to anybody."
Dee Davis, women’s basketball student-athlete
Vanderbilt University
Nashville Tennessean
"Tempted? Yes. It’s so easy to get caught up in that just because a lot of people say, ‘Who’s going to win? I’l bet you $20.’ Then you have to stop yourself and say, ‘Wait, I can’t do that.’ It may seem harmless to them, but it could have a lot greater consequences."
Dan Cage, men’s basketball student-athlete
Vanderbilt University
Nashville Tennessean
"My advice to guys coming into college athletics is, outside of playing cards with your buddies on a Friday night, keep the money in your pocket. Then you’ll be all right."
Firing coaches
Selena Roberts, Columnist
The New York Times
"We have come to a point where the physics of balance — not every team can be on top all the time — has been overcome by the warped values of college football hedonists.
"Pleasure is winning. Joy is being No. 1. Anything else is unacceptable.
"The expanding chasm between America’s rich and poor is reflected in college football’s unquenchable excess. College spirit is not a vanity purchase by the super-rich. They have chosen teams and are financing them, turning football factories into their favorite charity."
