Five years of eligibility

Steve Pederson, director of athletics
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
Omaha World-Herald

“It would simplify the whole process if they just said you’ve got five years to play. If you play two of that or five of that, for whatever reason, it doesn’t matter.
“We’ve talked about this for so long. Let’s bring it to a head and see if there is support for it.”

Kevin Weiberg, commissioner
Big 12 Conference
Omaha World-Herald

“(Faculty athletics representatives) don’t like the idea of sending a message to student-athletes that five years to complete a degree is a good thing or acceptable, even though we know most college students take that long.”

Myles Brand, president
National Collegiate Athletic Association
The Associated Press

“I think if we do it right, to make sure student-athletes actually have educational activities throughout their five years — which approximates the actual practice — and we do away with medical redshirting and actual redshirting, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Grant Teaff, executive director
American Football Coaches Association
The Associated Press

“The redshirt thing, with 12 games, becomes a huge burden. Then there is the bowl game for many of the teams on top of the 12. Teams need everybody available.”

Barry Alvarez, director of athletics
University of Wisconsin, Madison

The Associated Press

“There would be an entitlement to five years. As a coach, you want them to graduate in four. If they’re not contributing, you need that scholarship to replenish your team.”

Thomas Boeh, director of athletics

California State University, Fresno
Fresno Bee

“It would help women’s basketball, it would help volleyball, it would help everybody across the board.”
