Wisconsin-Oskhosh found the right pieces to the puzzle of how to continue winning team titles in the Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Titans, who won the championships in 2004 and 2006 behind since-graduated throws star Robyn Jarocki, pieced together wins in the 200- and 400-meter runs and the hammer throw — along with clutch performances in other events — to capture their third outdoor title in four years in their own stadium May 24-26.
Earlier this year, it looked like Jarocki’s departure took too much away from the Titans, who posted a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Division III indoor championships in March.
But the motivation of competing at home and a desire to demonstrate that the indoor performance was just a fluke seemed to fuel Wisconsin-Oshkosh as it overtook pre-meet favorite Calvin during the championships’ final events.
“Last year, we had that great team that rolled through everything. This year, we were the big underdogs, and I think that really helped us,” Titans coach Deb Vercauteren told the Oshkosh Northwestern.
“That, and being at home.”
Wisconsin-Oshkosh again relied at least to a degree on its usual prowess in the throwing events with Terry Schwamb’s hammer win. But the Titans entered the final day of competition in fourth place, seven points out of the lead.
As things turned out, it was Wisconsin-Oskhosh’s sprinters who carried the key that opened the championships door. First, Amanda Donath chased down defending champion Rachel Anderson of Illinois Wesleyan to win the 400-meter dash.
Then, soon after freshman Kayla Sharpe narrowly put the Titans ahead of Calvin with her second-place finish in the shot put, Nadine Pieske clinched the title with a victory in the 200-meter dash.
“It seemed like nothing fell our way at indoors, but in hindsight that was a good thing because it made us hungry this weekend,” Vercauteren said. “Plus we were at home, and when you’re at home, you’re in front of your fans and your friends, and you want it that much more.”
The Titans’ teamwork also overcame a historic individual performance by Amherst’s Shauneen Garrahan, whose three individual victories at the meet boosted the Lord Jeffs to a third-place team finish.
Garrahan doubled in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs and also posted a championships record time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to become only the third woman — and first distance runner — to capture three events at a championships meet.
The meet’s only other multiple titlist was Christina Acquaviva of Cortland State, who survived a rain-lashed first day of competition in the heptathlon to win that event and then added a victory in the 100-meter hurdles.
Two returning champions successfully defended their titles. Shonda Jackson of Lincoln (Pennsylvania) again captured the 100-meter dash, while Alecia Watson of CCNY completed her second straight sweep of Division III’s indoor and outdoor triple jump championships.
