Oswego State battled through two consecutive overtime games to take the Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship March 18. The Lakers’ 4-3 overtime victory over defending champion Middlebury brought the school its first team championship in any sport.

Head coach Ed Gosek said his team opened up the semifinals “a little jittery,” but relaxed as the game went on.

“Once we got skating, I thought we started to generate better chances, and we just started to play better hockey,” he said.

The championship game was strenuous for Lakers goaltender Ryan Scott, a junior who set an Division III championship-game record with 47 saves, 19 in the first period alone.

Neither team scored in the first period, but the second period more than made up for the lack of action. Oswego State was first to the net, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second period on a power-play goal. Middlebury answered quickly, going ahead 2-1 in just 1:12. The score was tied again at the close of the second period after the Lakers scored with 3:48 to go.

Oswego State took another lead early in the third off another power-play goal, and the Lakers held the lead for much of the third period. Middlebury tied the score with 2:25 left in the game.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime period, but Oswego State’s Garren Reisweber scored the championship goal with 12:55 left.

“Our guys all year long have found a way to gut it out and hang in there. Tonight was no exception. They played extremely hard and smart,” Gosek said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

The national championship feeling didn’t come easily for Oswego State, which had to overcome fatigue from its 4-3 overtime win over St. Norbert in the semifinals the day before the nearly three-hour championship game. Even Reisweber noted that he was starting to feel weary before his game-winning shot.

“I had been dragging for the last two shifts, and then I got a leg-up on the backchecker and found something deep within. Some adrenaline,” he said.

Of course, the exhaustion was an afterthought as the team celebrated on the ice its — and the school’s — first national championship.

Middlebury, which ends the year 20-8-3, came into the championship game on a 10-game unbeaten streak after starting the season off uncharacteristically slowly. The Panthers had won the last three national titles in shutouts, but lost six games in the first half of the season before coming into their own in the second half.

Oswego State finishes the year 23-3-3.
