Williams won its first women’s team title despite winning no individual events at the Division III Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9-10 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Williams’ victory ended a three-year winning streak by Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which finished sixth. CCNY, propelled by a long jump win and repeat triple jump title by Alecia Watson, finished seven points behind the Ephs in claiming its second runner-up finish in meet history and best showing since 1997.
After posting a school-best runner-up finish at last year’s meet, Williams entered the meet as a team favorite, but had to string together scores in eight events to claim the win.
“We were really happy to be able to compete with all these great schools,” said Williams coach Ralph White. “We were able to place in each event we entered, so it was really a team effort.”
Junior Maddie Outman led the way for the Ephs, finishing second behind Watson in the long jump and adding fifth-place finishes in the 55-meter hurdles and 400-meter run to contribute 16 of Williams’ 42 points. Another 13 points came from senior Caroline Doctor, who was runner-up behind Watson in the triple jump and joined Outman as a scorer in the long jump with a fourth-place finish.
Williams also picked up points in the shot put, mile run and both relays.
A quartet of tightly packed Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference entries claimed third through sixth places at the meet, with Wisconsin-Eau Claire finishing just ahead of league rivals from Platteville, La Crosse and Oshkosh.
The meet at Rose-Hulman featured three record performances, including Wisconsin-Platteville’s 11:34.36 victory in the distance medley relay, anchored by Marcia Taddy. Taddy also joined Watson as the only double individual titlists at the meet with her win in the 800-meter run and a repeat title in the mile.
Three other women also posted etched their names in the record book: Rachel Anderson of Illinois Wesleyan, who repeated as champion in the 400-meter run and tied the event mark with a time of 55.46, and Megan Rossi of North Central (Illinois) and Meghan Voiland of Augustana (Illinois), who each leaped 12 feet, 11 ½ inches, in the pole vault.
While both Rossi and Voiland will be credited with the pole vault record, Rossi ultimately claimed the title when Voiland clipped the bar on the eighth jump of a tiebreaker.
