Sparked by an injured sophomore’s win on the final day of competition, Lincoln (Pennsylvania) ended Wisconsin-La Crosse’s six-year winning streak in men’s competition at the Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9-10 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Lincoln, winning its seventh title overall but first since 2000, used individual victories by Kedrieck Gibbons in the 55-meter hurdles and Bobby Young in the 400-meter run — and racked up 32 of its 59 points in the meet in those two events — to pull away from Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Gibbons’ victory, complemented with sophomore teammate Jermaine Morris’s third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, gathered the first of Lincoln’s 53 points from second-day events and enabled the Lions to catch and then pass an Eagle squad that won last year’s meet by a record 47 points.
“Not many know this, but (Gibbons) fractured his toe three weeks ago and ran through the pain this weekend,” said Lincoln coach Cyrus Jones, who has been at the Lion helm for all six of the school’s men’s championships since 1990.
“He showed us what a true athlete is and inspired our team.”
Young, who finished second in the 400-meter run last year, broke through in his senior season for his first indoor title and combined with freshman teammate Corey Wright (who finished third in the event) for more crucial points.
The Lions also collected a second-place finish from Jamal Whitted in the high jump and were close runners-up to Wisconsin-La Crosse in the 1,600-meter relay.
“We came out strong today, and the kids really made a believer out of me,” Jones said. “They worked hard all year and really deserve this.”
Although Wisconsin-La Crosse came up short in its bid for a 14th overall indoor team title, the Eagles joined Lincoln and third-place Wisconsin-Oshkosh as the only squads to claim two event titles. Sophomore Bobby Riley claimed the shot put title to go with the Wisconsin-La Crosse’s relay win.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Brandon Houle won the weight throw and finished second to Riley in the shot put to post the highest individual point total at the meet (18 points), and the Titans also won the distance medley relay.
The meet’s only record came in the mile run, where Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer improved on his own year-old mark with a 4:08.19 time.
Greg Tyson of Heidelberg also was a repeat individual titlist with his win in the long jump.
