Conferences: The North Atlantic Conference will add football as its 15th sponsored sport beginning with the 2009 season, with five associate members joining current NAC member Husson College in competition for the league championship. The associate members are Becker College, Gallaudet University, State University of New York Maritime College, Mount Ida College and Norwich University. Those schools currently play independent schedules in football, except for Norwich, which currently is competing in the Empire 8 as an associate member. “The NAC is delighted that student-athletes will soon have the opportunity to participate in nonscholarship intercollegiate football at the NCAA Division III level,” said Castleton State College President Dave Wolk, who chairs the NAC Presidents Council. “The unanimous vote of the presidents of the conference signifies the wide acceptance of long-established as well as recently organized football programs, with the brand of strong competition, academic focus and good sportsmanship that has characterized our other NAC programs.” The six football-playing NAC schools will play a round-robin schedule before ending the season with a championship playoff game. “As with each of our conference-sponsored sports, the NAC is committed to providing positive and competitive opportunities for our football student-athletes,” said Commissioner Julie Muller. “We look forward to a positive affiliation with each of our new associate members and welcome them to the North Atlantic Conference.” The departure of Norwich from Empire 8 football competition would leave that conference with six football-playing members.

nullnullMilestones: Luis Reis became the 25th women’s soccer coach and second-fastest in Division III to reach the 200-victory plateau when Wheaton College (Massachusetts) defeated Tufts University September 11. Reis reached the milestone in 238 games. Joe Russo of The College of New Jersey reached the mark in 234 games. Reis began the season with an .856 winning percentage, ranking third among Division III women’s soccer coaches and fifth among all NCAA coaches. During his first 11 seasons at Wheaton, the Lyons have appeared in seven straight Division III Women’s Soccer Championships, reaching the semifinals in 2004. His teams also have won eight straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference regular-season titles and six league tournament titles. The Lyons are unbeaten in conference play since 2000, carrying a 76-game winning streak into its September 22 league opener against Smith College — the second longest men’s or women’s conference soccer winning streak ever in any NCAA division ... Bob Weiner collected his 300th career victory in women’s volleyball September 7 when Keene State College defeated Eastern Connecticut State University in the Endicott College Tournament. Weiner is in his third season with the Owls after previous stints during his 20-year coaching career at Franklin Pierce College, Macalester College, Montana State University-Northern, Assumption College and, most recently, Iona College, where he collected 74 victories through four seasons.
