Sports sponsorship: Saint Vincent College is fielding a football team this season for the first time in 45 years after kicking off the season September 1 against Gallaudet University. The Bearcats opened the season before a sold-out grandstand in recently constructed Chuck Noll Field, named for the former NFL coach who led his Pittsburgh Steelers teams through preseason training camps at Saint Vincent during his tenure with that team. Saint Vincent, which previously sponsored the sport from 1923 until it was dropped after the 1962 season, welcomed 44 first-year players to the school this year (including nine transfers) in addition to about 60 current students who joined the team. “I can’t tell you how good we’re going to be, but I know the guys will play hard,” coach Bob Colbert said during the Presidents’ Athletic Conference media day in early August. “I hope we will be competitive; we will see how they react,” added the former associate head coach at Bridgewater College.
Miscellaneous: Meredith College unveiled a new nickname and a new logo with an August 22 event that also served to kick off the 2007-08 athletics year. The single-gender institution officially incorporated Meredith’s longtime angel mascot into its logo and amended its athletics nickname to Avenging Angels. “The new logo and nickname is a fresh and fun beginning that marks an exciting kickoff for Meredith as we enter a new conference,” said recent graduate and former student-athlete Lauren Powers, who helped unveil the logo. PAVE Creative Group of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, produced the design with guidance from an athletics identity committee at the school. That committee was formed to help plan Meredith’s entry into the USA South Conference. Meredith Vice President for College Programs Jean Jackson said during the kickoff event that the nickname will “make clear that Meredith College is serious about athletics...that we should be known to all as agile, fierce, powerful, loyal, determined (and) complex warriors.” The school’s athletics teams were present for the kickoff event. “We are celebrating many things today — a new season, a new logo, an updated nickname for our sports teams, and Meredith’s official entrance into the USA South Conference,” said college President Maureen A. Hartford. “But most importantly, we’re here to celebrate our student-athletes, and their past and future accomplishments.” ... College Misericordia officially became Misericordia University August 24, culminating a nearly three-year process during which the concept was considered. “Our move to university status reflects an evolution of Misericordia from a small women’s college to a coeducational institution enrolling more than 2,000 students and offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs today,” said university President Michael A. MacDowell, who added that under the umbrella of a university, the institution can now offer more flexibility and even greater opportunities for traditional and nontraditional students in undergraduate and graduate programs, including an MBA and advanced degress in physical and occupational therapy. In conjunction with the transition to university status, Misericordia also changed its athletics logo and the Anderson Center arena floor. The school mascot remains the Cougar and the school colors are still royal blue and gold.
