Facilities: A gift in memory of a former college trustee and graduate will fund renovation of Huntingdon College’s Delchamps Student Center, including its gymnasium. The gift from Charles and Kim Roland will fund a new floor, bleachers and windows in the gymnasium, which will be named the Catherine Dixon Roland Arena in memory of Charles’ mother, a 1958 graduate of the school. The work also will include improvements to the lobby, entrance and facade of the renamed Roland-Delchamps Student Center. “This is a major gift to the college that will do much good for our students and for our athletics programs,” said President J. Cameron West. “The renovation will make the gymnasium usable for academic ceremonies, lectures and community events, and will include vast improvements in the facilities for our student-athletes, Huntingdon community members and visitors who use the gym. The gift is even more special because it memorializes Catherine Roland and the contributions she made to the life of Huntingdon College as a student, an alumna, a trustee and a college friend.” The new floor is described by college officials as a “floating flooring system” that is expected to reduce student-athletes’ susceptibility to injury. The new floor and bleachers are expected to be in place for the 2007-08 men’s and women’s basketball seasons.
Milestones: Carroll LaHaye collected her 400th victory in women’s basketball when Randolph-Macon College defeated Randolph-Macon Woman’s College February 10. LaHaye, who is in her 25th season with the Yellow Jackets, is the 21st Division III women’s basketball coach to achieve the milestone. The Yellow Jackets have won two straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles and played in the Division III Women’s Basketball Championship three of the past four years ... Wittenberg University’s Pam Smith also joined the ranks of 400-game winners in women’s basketball February 15 when the Tigers defeated Kenyon College in a game delayed one day by a snowstorm. Smith has guided Wittenberg to eight Division III tournament appearances and 11 North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season titles since taking the reins of the program in 1986. She was honored after the game with a proclamation from the mayor of Springfield, Ohio, declaring February 15 Pam Smith Day.
