Sports sponsorship: Daniel Webster College announced the addition of field hockey and women’s lacrosse, boosting the total of varsity sports at the school to 12. “Field hockey and women’s lacrosse continue to show phenomenal growth across the nation and in the region,” said Phil Rowe, assistant vice president of student affairs for athletics. “We see this as a fantastic opportunity to expand athletics options for female student-athletes here at the college.” The school also announced a full-time staff member will be added to head both programs. The two sports are the first added at the school since 1998. The field hockey program will begin varsity play in 2008 after playing a limited club schedule in 2007. The lacrosse team will play a club schedule in 2008 before beginning varsity play in 2009 ... Randolph-Macon Woman’s College’s recent decision to become a coeducational institution brings with it plans to add men’s teams in basketball, cross country, soccer and tennis in 2007-08 and a men’s lacrosse team for 2008-09. The school officially will change its name to Randolph College July 1.
Milestones: Dick Reynolds won his 600th career game — becoming only the fifth Division III men’s basketball coach to achieve the milestone — when Otterbein College defeated Muskingum College December 9. Reynolds, who is in his 35th season at the school, has coached the Cardinals to 13 Division III Men’s Basketball Championship appearances, including a national title in 2002 ... Two Division III women’s basketball coaches recently reached the 500-win milestone. Jack Surridge achieved the mark December 29 when North Park College defeated Rockford College in the Rockford Holiday Tournament, and Gary Fifield joined the club January 9 when nationally ranked University of Southern Maine defeated Rhode Island College. Surridge, who also is athletics director at the school, is in his 11th season as women’s coach at North Park and is believed to be the only coach who has won more than 100 games at three institutions. Fifield, meanwhile, continues to lead active Division III women’s coaches with an .862 winning percentage after 19 seasons and three runner-up finishes in the Division III Women’s Basketball Championship ... Mike Neer claimed his 500th victory as men’s basketball coach at the University of Rochester when the Yellowjackets defeated Brandeis University January 5. Neer is in his 31st season at the school, where he collected a Division III Men’s Basketball Championship title in 1990 ... Steve Bankson won his 400th men’s basketball game in 27 seasons at Baldwin-Wallace College when his team defeated Muskingum College January 3. Bankson, who also is athletics director at the school, has an additional 281 wins at the high school and junior college levels ... Joe Cassidy earned his 200th victory in men’s basketball when Rowan University downed Chestnut Hill College December 22. Cassidy, who was an assistant at the school when the Profs won the Division III title in 1996, is in his 11th season as head coach at the school, where he has guided four teams to Division III tournament appearances.
Miscellaneous: Kyle Born of Whitman College equaled a nearly 52-year-old Northwest Conference single-game scoring record held by the legendary Elgin Baylor when Born scored 53 points January 2 in a 153-149 loss to the University of Redlands. Interestingly, Baylor set the record as a freshman against Whitman, when his College of Idaho team capped a perfect 1954-55 season with the budding superstar’s 23 baskets and seven free throws against the Missionaries. Born, who is in his senior season, made 25 of 29 shots from the floor and added three free throws. After setting the original mark, Baylor transferred to Seattle University, where he led that team to a runner-up finish in the 1958 NCAA basketball championship game before embarking on a hall of fame career in the National Basketball Association. Before Born’s performance, Whitworth College’s Rod McDonald held the scoring mark for schools that currently are members of the league, with his 51 points against Redlands during the 1966-67 season.
